For those who don't know what a fisking is, it is a point-by-point refutation of an error filled letter or news story, named after Robert Fisk, the nuttier-than-Grapenuts British "journalist". This letter to the editor in the Oregonian today by Paul Lee, screamed out for the fisking treatment.
I agree with columnist David Reinhard that the problem of hate-filled intolerance is worsening, but his assertion that it is more prevalent among left-leaning people must be challenged. To this reader the opposite seems true. The ideology of the right wing of the political spectrum has historically supported positions that serve as the basis for hate and intolerance.
Such as slavery, Jim Crow laws, and other Democrat Party policies?
Opposition to gay rights sends the message that gays are inferior and deserve the hate and discrimination they suffer.
For some reason, conservatives are under the impression that the founding fathers believed that marriage is between a man and a woman.
Opposition to equal-rights legislation supports the idea that women are second-class citizens. Feminists who stand up for themselves are labeled "feminazis."
No, conservatives see women as equals and partners in life. "Feminazis" see society as a patriarchy, where marriage equals rape, and a womyn needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle.
A militaristic attitude toward solving international conflicts sends the message that violence is an acceptable way to solve problems.
Except for ending slavery, fascism, Nazism, and communism, what has fighting a war ever accomplished?
The purposeful use of Barack Obama's middle name, Hussein, is intended to portray him as "foreign" and has led John McCain supporters to think he is "an Arab" (as though an Arab-American would not be qualified to be president).
I wouldn't want to give the impression that Barack Hussein Obama, has an Arabic sounding name, because he has an Arabic name, not a Swahili name like most Kenyans have. I wouldn't want to give the impression that Barack Hussein Obama, Jr was named after a foreigner from Kenya named Barack Hussein Obama, Sr.
Claims that Obama "pals around with terrorists"...
What does Obama and bin Laden have in common? they both have friends that bombed the Pentagon! (And killed a police officer)
... incite statements such as "kill him" and "off with his head," and these threats are not challenged.
These statements were not challenged because they never happened.
Hate and intolerance are manifested in both individual acts of hate and policies that enable discrimination, oppression and inequality. While the right wing may not have a monopoly on hate and intolerance, it has the lion's share.

The very name of that weblog is hilarious. And accurate.
Good rebuttals.
