No, the Mecca-orientation of the Crescent of Embrace is NOT a product of the landform
The Gadfly ^ | Alec Rawls

Defenders of the Flight 93 memorial repeatedly insist that the Mecca orientation of the giant crescent HAS to be a coincidence.

This is the kind of thing at which conservatives should show up and block bulldozers. This is sickening beyond compare.

The design is a memorial to the murderers and an insult to the murdered. Plain and simple.

Rush was wondering when do we get to riot, this is an entirely appropriate thing to block, a %*%*^ Mosque that commemorates the Hijackers sacrifice.

The only appropriate edifice would be a crescent shaped urinal to properly “honor” the hijackers. It should be oriented so that urine streams face Mecca.

I really wish you'd give up this idea that Moslems can adopt whatever images they want to represent their beliefs and that they thereby gain exclusive use of them.

Think of what the French bakers were imagining when they invented croissants!

Funny fact: Croissants are of Austrian origin and the shape was intended to remind of the defeated Turks!

It's not a crescent. It's just not. It's not exactly a seciton of a circle, but it's more that that a crescent.

So I don't buy this. The writer goes at length "proving" many recondite things, but the critical thing to prove, that the shape he is complaining about is a crescent is taken as proven. That kind of sloppiness makes me think this is silly and over-exaggerated.

No sale.

"Crescent of Embrace" will feature a Tower of Voices, containing 40 wind chimes -- one for each passenger and crew member who died -- and two stands of red maple trees that will line a walkway caressing the natural bowl shape of the land.

Your feelings about what it looks like are irrelevant:

The title "Crescent of Embrace" was that given by the architect designer and accepted by the memorial committee. QED.

Your feelings about what it looks like are irrelevant:

They're not "feelings". A crescent is a particular shape: a circular area with the segment of another circular area subtracted from it.

This kind of thing reminds me of the contention that an old monogram for Jesus, IHS, thus:

is proof either that Christians worship dollars or that the dollar sign shows some kinship between the Federal Reserve and Christianity.

The symbol on the top of some minarets and in the flags of some Islamic nations is a true crescent, so called because "crescent" is the stem of the present participle of the Latin verb "to grow" or "increase" and it looks like a crescent, that is, "waxing", moon.

Personally, I don't favor giving my enemies monopolies over shapes and directions. If Mecca is in the direction in which I happen to be bowing, tough for Mecca. If the Muslims think they own the moon, the hell with them.

I suggest returning the panties to their original unwadded position.

Yeah, move it ... or blow up Mecca and then there’s no issue about the direction it’s facing.

If the Muslims think they own the moon, the hell with them.

Your premise is refuted in the classic SF short story, The Man Who Sold the Earth, by Otto Binder. ( I can find mention of it on the web, but no source. ) In the story, a guy in a bar in NYC sells the earth to some stranger for a few hundred dollars ( I think ) then worries about the possible consequences.

My premise?

Anyway it couldn't be a lot worse if the Islamo-Nazi wing thought they did own the moon. (But whatever they THINK, they don't.) They're trying to enforce the title they may think they have. This is no time to shy away from "reality therapy."

My premise?

I refer to your ( apparent ) premise that it doesn't matter if some or most moslems construe the design of the memorial as an obeisance to Islam.
