Marc Folco: Does Hollywood actress Ashley Judd have a clue about predator management?

Actress Ashley Judd recently started a feud between herself and Alaska Governor Sarah Palin when Judd joined the Defenders of Wildlife (DoW), an animal rights group, and allowed herself to be featured in a television campaign demonizing Alaska's scientific method of predator management and criticizing Palin for encouraging the program.

To control growing wolf numbers in certain parts of Alaska, where they are decimating moose and caribou populations, a number of the canines are shot from helicopters to thin the packs. Wolves cover vast territories, therefore hunting on foot is ineffective and impossible especially in deep snows.

The most efficient and effective method is to conduct an aerial search with the aid of snow cover, and once they are located, cull a certain number of animals from the aircraft. It's not hunting as the antis are portraying it. It's scientific management and predator control and only done where certain wildlife species are plummeting because of

predation by wolves. It's a highly-regulated culling operation that targets only problem animals.

The fact is that shooting wolves from helicopters and planes has been going on for decades. I remember reading about it in outdoor magazines when I was a kid. But now, because Gov. Palin is a Republican and ran for vice president, the liberals are making it a political issue. If they've got an issue, here's a tissue. Since when did wildlife management, which is conducted by scientists, biologists and people with college degrees in wildlife management, become subject to the whim of ditzy Hollywood celebrities, politicians or rabid animal rights groups? It's nonsensical.

In response to the unfounded attacks by DoW and Judd, a group of eight conservation organizations, spearhead by the U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance (USSA) and representing 3 million conservationists nationwide, sent a letter of support to Governor Palin.

"Given that many Alaska residents rely on moose, caribou and other wildlife species for food, it becomes imperative that those species not be decimated through lack of predator management," wrote Walter Pidgeon Jr., president and CEO of the U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance in support of the program.

The USSA says that the letter also highlights "the critical importance of science in wildlife management" and states that "the future of effective wildlife management necessitates that emotional pleas not substitute for reasoned analysis."

According to USSA Senior Vice President Rick Story, "It is imperative that people understand how important science is to maintaining healthy populations of wildlife species. In the absence of this program, not only would wildlife be destroyed, eventually, disease and hunger would kill far more wolves."

Story concluded, "It is simply wrong for an environmental group to use Hollywood glitz and glamour to hide science from the public." For more information, visit www.ussportsmen.org.

According to Field & Stream, Palin called the ad "reprehensible and hypocritical" in a statement released through the governor's office. "Shame on the Defenders of Wildlife for twisting the truth in an effort to raise funds from innocent and hard-pressed Americans struggling with these rough economic times," she added.

I think Judd is just jealous of Governor Palin.

Same old liberal horse crap. Whether it is global warming or dozens of other liberal propaganda the formula is always the same. Find an ignorant star or starlet with a high school diploma and let them show their ignorance. Half the populace being of the same caliber they assume because the actor once played like they were intelligent that this means they actually are capable of constructing a complex thought.

It takes to to make a feud and Sarah Palin refuses to answer to an idiot like Ashley Judd. Sarah is too busy getting the job done to be responding to foolsih little women who think because they make money pretending to be what they are not, that they are important. It’s funny how playing pretend, makes these pissant actors and actresses think that their views are relevant.

Maybe Ashley should talk to Texans who are hunting Wild Boars from Airplanes.

Or doctors who are "hunting" unborn children in abortion clinics.

Wolves are very important....as a fundraising cause for environmental groups, I suspect only global warming is equal to it.
A lack of information always shows, Judd obviously does nto realize that the wolves DOW and other enviros forced onto ranchers in the Rocky Mountain states of Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho, have been hunted and killed by USFWS from plains and choppers from the very beginning when they kill livestock. Of course they are given several shots at the livestock before FWS moves in, the first time they try to collar the killer. That is after they “try” to find the killer a few times. We the taxpayer paid to have them hauled in from Canada, and we pay the government to try to control them. Then we have to make up the taxes lost from the killed animals. Brilliant!

Well said, people don’t know that destruction caused by wolves and though the Judd’s of this world “feel” they are helping these wild animals, I wonder how long it would take her to scream bloody murder if she had one running around her neighborhood. Silly little “actress” should shut her big mouth and get an education instead of being manipulated by the commie-enviros.

Ashly Fudd could care less about the wolves. Its how can she hurt Gov Palin/Repubs and help obama. This has nothing to do w/wolves and caribou, its strictly politics.

Pray for America, Our Troops and Gov Palin

Hollywood is so full of predators I am sure that actual wolves are something she can at least identify easily.

The whole wolf story isn’t going anywhere now, just like it didn’t go anywhere during the campaign. It’s just being used to wring a few more dollars out of the “true believers.” Everyone else knows that predators have to be controlled, and contolling them means killing them. Wolves are a totally unsympathetic animal that most people have a deep fear of. Palin will most likely come out ahead, that is why this story is dying fast, the left realizes it’s a loser. Whether it’s wolves, taxes, starving Eskimos, drilling in ANWR, or opposition to the stimulus, Palin comes out on top of every attempt to smear her.
