The country was founded by Christians and the universalist principles—all created by equally the Creator—stem from a Christian ethos. The fact that others—Hindus, Jews, Bahais etc.—came and thrived here is in fact due to this universalist ethos. Obama is somewhere between a Muslim and a nonbeliever. He is obviously not a Christian, but the country is. He can’t change history.

I think he's a Christian, however he comes from a tradition which sees faith in racial terms, Jesus being black, whites the devils which kept them down. And which sympathizes with Muslims as people of color. Whether he actually believes the tenets of black liberation theology I haven’t a clue, he certainly couldn’t acknowledge it, but it clearly colors his thinking.
