Today is the 144th anniversary of the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln was shot by actor John Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theater in Washington, D.C. on April 14, 1865, just days after the end of the Civil War. Lincoln died the following morning at a home across the street from the theater where he was carried. Booth shot Lincoln in the back of the head just below the left ear.
