Christian University Decertifies Democrat Club, Why it is the Right Decision
Publius' Forum ^ | 5/23/09 | Warner Todd Huston

Tell me President Obama, how many babies would Jesus kill?

Liberty University, a Christian college situated near Lynchburg, Virginia and founded in 1971 by Jerry Falwell, has this week decertified its college Democratic Party club over the singular fact that the National Democratic Party is a supporter of abortion. After the debacle of allowing a president that is a supporter of infanticide being invited to speak at the leading Catholic University in the nation, I can only say that Liberty University should be congratulated for standing up for its principles. At least these Baptists actually believe in something unlike the putative Catholics at Notre Dame.

But is this a violation of political free speech in a nation where the Democratic Party is a long-standing, historically important political force that is followed by half the electorate and currently holds a majority of the seats in our national government? Are these students having their speech illicitly quashed by Liberty University?

The simple answer is a resounding "no."

The secular schools and universtities say the following to Christian groups that they kick off campus all the time.

“You are free to form your group anywhere you want, but not on our campus. This campus is privately owned, and the trustees determine what is and what is not allowed on campus.”

Public academic institutions use the much-touted, oft-invoked, “Separation of Church and State”.

Hmmmm ... Notre Dame was able to limit free speech by arresting pro-life protestors before Obama’s commencement speech, but Liberty is NOT allowed to determine what values it wants respresented on IT’S campus? I guess it’s true that some speech is more free than others.

Absolutely no. The students of today's universities are fools for the most part and need to be taught the Word of God and American history before they have a right to vote as they are part of the great multitude of ignorant people who do not know what they have in America.

Notre Dame has joined the ranks of secular universities that breed ignorance and create injustice in America through the lies of social indoctrination and secular engineering by the fools of America.

Shrug. Liberty University is a private school, it can conduct its affairs with respect to clubs in any way it sees fit. Of course it is only a "controversy" because the left wants to make it one.

I wonder if LU might consider a financial arrangement similar to the one done by Grove City College which enables the latter to exempt itself from all federal rules.

If I wasn’t sure about my decision to start my Masters degree at Liberty this fall, I am now! This is a school that is sure of its moral foundation and is willing to put its money where its mouth is. You know the ALCU is going to be all over this.

It’s not a tough issue. It’s quite simple.

“But is this a violation of political free speech in a nation where the Democratic Party is a long-standing, historically important political force that is followed by half the electorate and currently holds a majority of the seats in our national government? Are these students having their speech illicitly quashed by Liberty University?”

Well, obviously not if they represent “half the electorate and currently holds a majority of the seats in our national government”.

Unless their voice has been silenced after being placed in prisons as they do in China and Cuban, or taken out and shot, I’d have to say no.

Don’t forget that no one is holding a gun to anyone’s head to force them to attend LU either. As long as choice exists, then no censorship is taking place.

You have to wonder why those Democrats are there in the first place.

Liberal universities also use "hate speech" codes to intimidate and silence critics of gay marriage, feminism, affirmative action, etc. And as we saw in the Duke Lacrosse rape fraud, liberal faculty will unfairly target clubs that they dislike.

It is odd that “democracy” has such a hold even at Liberty University.

THEY PROTEST TO LOUDLY (the Democrats): the truth is that the Democrats and the Secular left just do not like when someone (legally, even) does the same to them that they do to hundreds and thousands of conservtatives everyday (and not just on private colleges-which have a right to just like Liberty, but at state schools as well: which is ILLIGAL_~)!

I had a friend that went to ND and he called it “CINO” (and said his father was hard-core Catholic and would really agree)!

WaWa, it’s a private institution,..in a state school you’d be right, but at a private institution they can do what they please (unless these students don’t use University Property/funds/etc..)

Now personally I’d welcome debate, (and liberalism would be defeated), but LU as a private Christian school has every right to not have it’s name used when students gather which support an organization contrary to its’ mission.

I was actually tying to defend LU. IMHO if a public or non-denominational university can harass and intimidate students under “hate speech” rules, LU certainly has even more right to shut down a club that, to its thinking, advocates the murder of the unborn.
