Senators Getting Cold Feet on Taxing Health Benefits
Patriot Room ^ | July 7, 2009 | Bill Dupray

This is a big deal because taxing health benefits is the biggest possible piggy-bank the Dems can break to pay for ObamaCare. Without it, the whole thing may fall under its own weight. The Senators talked to constituents (or at least read some polls) over the Independence Day break and found, shockingly, that people don't like the idea of a huge tax increase.

All I can say is that a huge majority of the Congress wants Socialized Medicine...so there is a good chance of cutting a deal.

Don’t be sandbagged...it’s not over until it’s killed officially. Keep calling and fighting.

They’ll just pay for it like they do everything else. Print/spend money we don’t have, run massive deficits, and kick the can down the road leaving the difficult decisions for someone else to face.

Socialist Security/Medicare used to be the big Ponzi scheme in DC. Now the entire federal budget is a Ponzi scheme.

Well then, let them be the first to join! Let them shuck off their present gold-plated VIP care and go in as plain old citizen XP294ln. No privileges, no perks, just like the rest of us. If they won't buy into this new system, why should we?

My doctor was telling me the tax will also include the cost of procedures and other medical care. He said if I went into the hospital and ran up a $100,000 bill I would have to pay taxes on a portion of that bill. It sounds as if they are going to force us into government care by using taxes and fines. Only the biggest idiot could look at this government and say it’s not out of control. Our freedom is under attack by the dirtiest scum in the world. We deserve to suffer if we let this band of homos and whores ruin our country.

Sorry - but I don’t think the doctor’s correct...but then again I would not put anything past the Dems.

In any case, I don’t care if the doctor’s correct...as long as people keep hearing what will happen to them under Socialized Medicine, it will keep losing support. That’s what happened to Clinton and that’s why they’re in such a hurry.

Requiring, or more accurately "forcing" everyone to buy health insurance is really just a tax, except instead of writing a check to the government you write it to a private company. But it isn't a private market purchase if you have to, by law, buy the insurance. If you don't decide to "buy" insurance then you have to pay a fine to the government. Guess who collects that.

The cost of the insurance is way more than most people even pay in taxes. Consider a family of four, who around here at least pay over $1200 per month for health insurance. The requirement to buy health insurance costs you $14,400 per year - if you are lucky enough to find insurance that cheaply. If you don't buy the insurance, in one proposed bill, you owe the government the amount of premiums plus 15% for the period of time you failed to buy insurance.

Take a look at S.391, and grab a hold of your wallet. There won't be anything left in your wallet if everyone is required to buy health insurance, but those who don't earn enough money to do so receive a subsidy from the rest of us.

Making everyone buy insurance is worse, financially, than just having the taxpayers pay for every medical procedure. Obviously the net total premiums have to exceed the net total claims, or the insurance companies will go bankrupt. First you have to pay your health insurance premium, then, through taxes, the subsidy that pays the insurance premium for the lower income citizens. That's worse than just paying for their medical care -- after all, right now you only pay for the cost of actual care for the uninsured, not $1200 or more per month for every moderate income family.

The entire idea of forcing everyone to buy a product in order to supposedly make it cheaper is crazy.

The first time the Senate voted on socialized medicine, in the form of Hillarycare, it went down to a resounding defeat. Here’s hoping some Democrat Senators will come to their senses, and defeat Obamacare, as well.
