The parents of Sam Esquibel know him only as a miracle baby. The Colorado Springs infant survived surgery to remove what was believed to be a tumor when he was just 3 days old.
"The doctors said to us, 'This one is for the books,' " mom Tiffnie Esquibel said.
Inside the microscopic tumor was what looked like the formations of two feet, a hand and thigh.
"To find a perfectly formed structure (like this) is extremely unique, unusual, borderline unheard of," said Dr. Paul Grabb, the veteran pediatric neurosurgeon who performed the operation on Sam at Colorado Springs' Memorial Hospital for Children.
Whoa, that is crazy, neat and super disgusting all at the same time.

I don’t know. The article wasn’t super clear. All it says it that it could give new understanding to stem cells.
My bad, sorry.
Its my understanding that embryonic stem cells can be unpredictable. Thats why they use adult stem cells and stem cells from the patient to actually treat certain problems.
Amazing picture though
I knew about this when I worked as a Medical Records Secretary 50 years ago! I’ve forgotten the terminology, but it has been a known phenomenom for years. It was thought to result from the mother having an incomplete miscarriage and a subsequent pregnancy without having a D & C afterwards. As a matter of fact, it was referenced in the movie, “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” when the aunt proclaimed it about herself to the parents of the groom.
It’s called a parasitic twin, basically an identical twin never fully formed. Andy Garcia was also a parasitic twin.
Correction, Andy Garcia had a parasitic twin attached to him when he was born.
lol.
Andy Garcia was the parasitic twin?
LOL I corrected it, he was born with a parasitic twin attached to him, Andy Garcia had an identical twin that never fully formed, so the twin was attached to I think Andy’s shoulder and the baby was surgically removed.
I needed a good laugh today and your comment and the ones that followed did it for me. Thanks.
No problem LOL.
Could also be what’s called a “teratoma”....since no
one yet really knows how or why development occurs, there
is always a possibility for something like this to show up...I took embryology in college, and some of the
pics were way worse than that one...
It is truly amazing how babies of all species develop and
how just a simple adjustment of chemicals, lytes, or who
knows in utero would cause something like this to happen....
Frankly, the fact that babies even develop “normally” is somewhat of a miracle...(but it occurs too often for people to think that way)
LOL, I know. I was eating lasagna at the time. :-O
Interesting story.....
“Yes, inside the lump was my twin.” - My Big Fat Greek Wedding
Hope the kid ends up ok. This sort of thing isn’t terribly uncommon.
