Cowboys Win Battle of First Teamers; Niners Win Game

The Cowboys and Tony Romo came out gunning in the first quarter. Mixing up running and passing plays, they made their way down field almost at will. The 49er defense had no answers for the dominating play of the offensive line. That was the key for Romo and company throughout the entire first half.

On a few pass plays Romo dropped back and took some long looks before he decided where to execute. On one play Austin was so wide open for so long it looked like the defense did'nt even know he was there untill he made a sliding catch for a 22 yard gain. As the Cowboys were making their final aproach to the end zone Romo threw the ball into traffic and was intercepted. Overall Romo was 11 of 17 for 125 yards passing and lead the team to 195 total yards with 13 first downs, getting the offense into scoring position on 3 of 4 drives.

On game 3 of the preseason a lot of teams let their starters play longer than normal. Usually 2 quarters. This is because next weeks game will be between who makes the team and who does not. In other words the starters will either have no play or very little. So this game 3 was the last warm up before the regular season. Keep in mind in these exhibition games there is no real strategy. They are just making sure the team knows the plays. So I would never put much stock into the preseason. Think about it does anyone ever really remember previous preseasons?

Next week final preseason game should be good. You will see battles for who makes the team and who does not. I believe the first cuts are this Tuesday, and then the final cuts the following week to the 53 man roster.

I've been an avid cowboy fan since 1966. I attended my first game Sept 18, 1966. I grew up in Joisey and cheered for the Giants. I was stationed in Texas and attended the Cowboy vs Giants on that crisp fall day.

With all the talk about Romo there is no comparison to Dandy Don Meredith. He may have been coach Landry's biggest headache but he got the job done. When he called plays on the field which were unique and not in the playbook he drove Landry mad but the crowd roared!

That day he whittled the giants down to size 52 to 7 and I became a believer.

Cowboys will be better this year without the constant fretting of getting TO the ball. They will rely on more methodical drives, spreading the wealth, and using their weapons in the running game. Felix Jones is going to be a star.

I just don’t know about the coach. As a defensive co-ordinator he’s great, but as a head coach, I just don’t think he has it.

The Cowboys and Romo are fortunate. The Niners have absolutely no pass rush (1 sack in three games). The one time Romo was harried he threw an interception. It will not be a good year for the Cowboys.
