I don’t think he was communist or nazi. He was a lefty, certainly, and a Pom (not American). And J Edgar Hoover did make it impossible for him to return to the United States after the war, when he returned to the UK for a visit.
He did get caught up in the McCarthy situation, but then so did most of Hollywood.
Being in J Edgar Hoover’s bad books doesn’t necessarily make Charlie Chaplain anti-American. In my opinion J Edgar Hoover was one of the greatest unhanged villains of American history, and it was a travesty that he was allowed to shape the FBI for so long.
Modern Hollywood is far more dangerous to America than Charlie Chaplain ever was.

I'm always amazed that with his politics and poor choices with women ( lesbians ) he had enough on the ball to get out of the stock market just before the crash. He warned others to do the same but had very few takers.
