Who has the authority to oversee Intelligence?

Posted on 11/25/2009 5:19:22 AM PST by CommieCutter

I continue to hear the BS that Bush somehow filtered the Iraq pre-war Intelligence before it was received by the Senate over sight committee. It was my understanding that it IS the Senate's job to oversee intelligence. Is that correct?

I remember Rummy testifying before Congress. Seems like he said something like - we know what we know, but when it is known that we know it, it will change. I think it is just an excuse to continue to blame W.

U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence

“As a member of the House Intelligence Committee, I am keenly aware that the proliferation of chemical and biological weapons is an issue of grave importance to all nations. Saddam Hussein has been engaged in the development of weapons of mass destruction technology which is a threat to countries in the region and he has made a mockery of the weapons inspection process.”

Technically correct. However, you should observe there is no intelligence in the Senate. None.

Check out the workings of the "Senate Select Committee on Intelligence"

They knew everything Bush knew.

And one member of that committee was Jay Rockefeller (D)West Virginia, and NOT BUSH, who called Iraq an "Imminent threat"

"As the attacks of September 11 demonstrated, the immense destructiveness of modern technology means we can no longer afford to wait around for a smoking gun. September 11 demonstrated that the fact that an attack on our homeland has not yet occurred cannot give us any false sense of security that one will not occur in the future. We no longer have that luxury.

September 11 changed America. It made us realize we must deal differently with the very real threat of terrorism, whether it comes from shadowy groups operating in the mountains of Afghanistan or in 70 other countries around the world, including our own.

There has been some debate over how "imminent" a threat Iraq poses. I do believe that Iraq poses an imminent threat, but I also believe that after September 11, that question is increasingly outdated.

I think it was Clarke who said the object of “secret intelligence” is to keep it secret.

Rockefeller: There has been some debate over how "imminent" a threat Iraq poses. I do believe that Iraq poses an imminent threat, but I also believe that after September 11, that question is increasingly outdated.

And yet, he felt the need to commit treason by warning Saddam and Iraq that war was imminent.

"I took a trip by myself in January of 2002 to Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Syria, and I told each of the heads of state that it was my view that George Bush had already made up his mind to go to war against Iraq — that that was a predetermined set course which had taken shape shortly after 9/11."
[That's PRESIDENT George Bush to you, asshole!]

So spoke Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) on “Fox Sunday” on November 14, 2005, who at the time of his trip was chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and is now its vice chairman.

By himself and fully armed with America’s most sensitive intelligence, Sen. Rockefeller decided to go to three Arab countries – including Syria which is on the State Department’s list of terrorist regimes and a close ally of Saddam Hussein – and literally alert them to what (“in my view”) might befall a neighboring Arab state.

This was Sen. Rockefeller’s judgment only four months after September 11th and a full year before President Bush had expressed any intention to go to war!
