Phil Jones, CRU director “temporarily” steps down pending an investigation

The following just passed over the AP wire. CRU director and author of many of the damning “hacked” emails, Phil Jones, has temporarily stepped down pending an independent investigation. This is only the beginning of his problems. East Anglia University holds all the emails and source data (what’s left of it, on its computers. They should be able ascertain the scope of the fraud he perpetrated. If data has been recently destroyed, they should be able to find out who did it. Happy hunting guys!

"Britain's University of East Anglia says the director of its prestigious Climatic Research Unit is stepping down pending an investigation into allegations that he overstated the case for man-made climate change. The university says Phil Jones will relinquish his position...."

He should be on unpaid leave!

But I am ever so glad that this story broke when it did. :-)

Why You Should Be Hot and Bothered About 'Climate-gate'
FoxNews.com ^ | November 24, 2009 | John Lott

Computer hackers have obtained 160 megabytes of e-mails from the Climate Research Unit at the University of East Anglia in England. These e-mails, which have now been confirmed as real, involved many researchers across the globe with ideologically similar advocates around the world. They were brazenly discussing the destruction and hiding of data that did not support global warming claims. The academics here also worked closely with the U.N.'s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Professor Phil Jones, the head of the Climate Research Unit, and Professor Michael Mann at Pennsylvania State University, who has been an important scientist in the climate debate, have come under particular scrutiny.

Among his e-mails, Professor Jones talks to Professor Mann about the "trick of adding in the real temps to each series...to hide the decline [in temperature]."..."

Another professor at the Climate Research Unit, Tim Osborn, discusses in e-mails how truncating a data series can hide a cooling trend that would otherwise be seen in the results. Professor Mann sent Professor Osborn an e-mail saying that the results he is sending shouldn't be shown to others because the results support critics of global warming. Time after time the discussions refer to hiding or destroying data. ..."

Well, maybe by CNN standards.

Unless the hard drives have been replaced or degaussed the information is not lost, a decent geek can retrieve it.

If data has been recently destroyed, they should be able to find out who did it.

If its on a University central computer, maybe there is a Backup!

We might have a few snow flurries in Houston on Friday night. So much for global warming.

In my humble opinion:

the BAD NEWS is, Jones stepping down is just an act in the “investigation theatre” that UEA is putting on. He will be found innocent of any wrongdoing and everything he has done so far will be endorsed. The evil hackers will be made into criminals and Jones et al will be portrayed as victims.

the GOOD NEWS is, although the *official* investigation will be a whitewash, it won’t matter. As thoughtful, honest people dig more and more into the released text and data, they will draw their own conclusions — and the inescapable conclusion is, the science of AGW is at best inconclusive and at worst contradictory. Scientists, with and without an axe to grind in the controversy, will be able to “prove” (in the scientific sense) that the IPCC AR4 report is built on sand and that there is no justification for torpedoing every advanced economy in the world to “fight global warming” that doesn’t need fighting right now, if ever.

One good outcome is that CRU has now decided that they would release their data.

Every paper on AGW now will have to do the same and be scrutinized - the “if CRU does it, then why aren’t you argument will be used”. Code with REM lines that use the words “FUDGE FACTOR” will be easily spotted....:^)

Hopefully all future papers will now release enough code/data to be replicated.

This alone should shoot down the IPCC alarmist predictions.
