If everyone did this and forced restaurants to pay a set wage, we could finally recover the billions of dollars in taxes that go unreported every year.

Yep. That’s the whole problem with our country; not enough taxes being collected. And too much incentive for employees to do a good job.//sarc

The government has plenty of money.

It does not need one single cent more.

Especially not from people who make 2.13 $ per hour.

and add $1 or more to every drink you pay for? $1-5 on every food item you get?
you end up paying for it one way or another. personally, i prefer to let my service define my own tips as i cannot believe any bar is going to start paying me the $20+/ hr to sling drinks that i often make in tips.

Here's an idea. Why don't we throw out our Charlie Foxtrot of a tax code, and come up with something that doesn't require people to jump through hoops, spend lots of time and money just to comply, and gets everyone, including those in the underground economy that NEVER PAY ANY TAXES!

Unreported tip income is not in the billions. Most states and the feds have laws that force reporting through the 8% of sales rule or reporting all charged tips (collected on credit cards by the business).

Also, the standard today is to put all charged tips on a payroll check instead of paying them out of the register in cash at the end of a shift like small businesses still do. One way it was sold to wait staff for not getting cash daily was that with a paycheck they were paying into Social Security and Medicare. If they never reported their cash tips they wouldn’t have this in their old age.

Hmmmmmmm, maybe that’s better than not getting income tax on them!
