I notice you don’t list your state on your profile page.

That’s a stupid reason to move. Sorry, but that’s the way it is.

"Truthfully, I'm more comfortable with immigrants from south of the border than I am those damn liberal Yankees and West Coasters who bring their brand of socialism when they move here."

You really make an excellent point.

I believe it will be Hawaii.

There is nothing worse than a Yankee who moves to Texas (or any other Southern State) and then becomes more Texan than the ones whose families have been there 250 years.

On the other hand there is nothing better than a conservative Yankee who moves South because he loves the area.

You should look into travel time to work. Where is the job?

Great place to live, raise children, and retire.

Texans are generous, patient, love life and their freedom. There are many challenges that faces Texas and the people who live there. Liberals have been trying to diminish the conservative core of Texas for years but fail at every attempt. There are some cities within Texas (Austin) where the Liberals have a toe hold but they are held at bay by a strong moral compass and massive conservative core.

Texas is like a whole other country with its own culture and strong set of traditions. Texas as a state does not need the Federal Government and makes it clear to the clowns in D.C. We welcome people form all over to come and live, work and enjoy life. However if people come here with ill intent and commit crimes we do have a room for those in state run facility and Texas does not have a problem enforcing capital punishment.

We have lived in Texas for 35 years and found the state a great place to make a decent wage, raise a family, and share life with many close friends whom support each other. So if you are wanting to move to Texas, then come on and enjoy some BBQ, friends and great music,

Just started a 2-3 yr plan to pay bills and prepare to move. I figure we have 5 years if this Obamacrap Care bill passes before things get really bad.

Appreciate folks sharing their thoughts :)

Am I misreading the Texas mantra of "Don't mess with Texas" or is this truly a part of the culture of the state among the majority of Texans?

You've read Texans correctly. At least, that is, the majority of Texans. We have liberals and Democrats here, too, but they don't have near the power that they do in most states.

Texans are generally some of the most easy-going, friendliest people you'd ever want to meet, but you really don't want to piss them off. Really. You don't want to do that.

Not a Texan. Never lived in Texas.

Yet you're somehow an expert on the illegal immigration situation here. Right...

I have family here, though, so it would be hard either way (staying in California or going & missing everyone).

I was born and raised in California. All four of my grand parents are buried in L.A. County, and my entire extended family (including two grand kids) are there.

Things are so bad in California, and the trajectory of the state's fortunes is such, that I made the choice to pull up stakes and move to Texas four years ago with my wife and younger kids.

We have not experienced a single moment of regret for having made that decision. I do miss my folks on occasion, but hey, that's what the internet and telephones are for.

Thanks for the assist Deport. The company fathers will be going out to Houston looking for a location, possible this week. We went there over the weekend just to look around at the area. Only having a few hours there, we rode around the western side, around Katy. We want to return soon and look at the northern side. The southern and eastern side are off the table for us, due to the closer proximity to the bay. We live near a bay now and are constantly concerned during hurricane season. Hurricane tidal surge nearly had us underwater during Katrina and others. Also, I have read that property taxes vary a lot from county to county in Texas. Insurance cost come into play also.

My allergies are acting up already. I know this is the allergy capital of the US, but will stay anyway.

Old friend of mine from high school lives just north of San Antonio. Says the economy there has hardly burped despite Obama’s best efforts to the contrary. Were researching and job hunting via the net now, looking at a 2-3 year plan to get out of debt and build up a moving fund.

I grew up on the northern outskirts of SA & it's really developing fast over the past decade or two. Your friend is spot on. I know that land prices are overpriced cuz of the demand - housing probably the same. One wouldnt know there is economic problems in the rest of the nation.

It's a very pretty area - seems a lot of people want to settle down in the Texas hill country. It's a good area to settle - especially if one has some entrepreneurial talent.

We now live about 75 miles north of SA now - fortunately.
