As the Tea Party Express rolled into Searchlight on Saturday, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid wasn’t home. Instead, he spent his morning at the grand opening of the Clark County Shooting Park, firing a shotgun at one of the facility’s new ranges.

“Everyone has said this is the greatest park in the United States of America, but I say it’s the greatest gun park in the world,” Reid said.

Reid helped to secure land and $61 million for the 2,900-acre facility under the Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act. He was joined at the ribbon-cutting ceremony Saturday by National Rifle Association of America Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre, Rep. Shelley Berkley, Rep. Dina Titus, state Sen. John Jay Lee and Clark County Commissioner Tom Collins.

Reid practiced shooting at one of the ranges, firing six rounds from a 12-gauge shotgun and hitting two clay birds. Each clay bird busted into pieces and the crowd cheered as Reid reloaded the gun. Collins also fired several rounds.

Shooting at the park, on the northern edge of the valley, costs $7 per day for rifles, pistols and archery and $6 per 25-bird round for shotguns.

It has an archery range and building with a 30-seat classroom, a rifle and pistol range, and a shotgun center and 80 spaces for recreational vehicles.

LaPierre said the park is expected to be a tourist attraction with 35,000 to 40,000 people expected to participate in shooting activities each year.

“I know how you worked,” LaPierre said to Reid before turning back to the audience. “(This) would not have opened without the work of Sen. Reid.”

Since the park first opened on weekends in January, Lee said more than 4,000 shooters have participated – which he called a significant amount considering the range hasn’t been advertising.

The park will also be used for educational purposes, Collins said. Many youth groups have visited the park to learn about shooting sports and gun safety, he said.

Michael Reese, 15, said he has been shooting for seven years and visits the park every other weekend with his father. It’s become a tradition for the two of them, he said.

“It’s a very nice facility,” Reese said.

Hey folks, when will we all wake up and realize that the NRA is a sell out gun group. They are Washington insiders at the worst. This is the perfect example. Working hand in hand with Harry Reid, a communist politician and the chief architect of Barack Obama's left-wing agenda, to get taxpayer money to build a gun park. In the process, giving Harry Reid political cover on the gun issue. Shame on you NRA. Shame on us for thinking that they don't sell gun owners out all across the country.

The NRA should publicly water board Reid on his gun views before giving an endorsement.

This is the reason why real second amendment advocates should support groups like the National Association for Gun Rights (www.nagr.org) or Gun Owners of America (www.gunowners.org).

Wake up guys! The NRA is a political animal. They are Washington insiders.

Dingy Harry obviously does not shoot any better than he votes. Bye Bye Harry, you'll be voted out of office in November.

Don’t worry...certain Freepers will be along shortly to extol the virtues of the NRA ...grrrr. I’ve said for years that the NRA will sell it’s soul keep the donations flowing to pay for it’s “big glass castle” in Fairfax.

Here I am.
No less than Bill Clinton credited NRA for Algore’s loss in the run against George W. Bush.

I have been an NRA life member for many years, if I had not already paid for this, I would tell them to shove it. I will however use my Life leverage to raise certain hell in the ranks.

Some years ago I made a run for the Texas legislature. The fellow I ran against had voted against the Texas concealed carry law three separate times but who did they endorse. My opponent of course! I told them where to stick my life membership at that point and went to GOA.

And how does that excuse LaPierre propping up Reid yesterday?

That’s probably because Al Gore credited Bill Clinton for Al Gore’s loss to George Bush.

I can't speak for LaPierre but I'd guess this is mostly piss-poor timing.

I too am a Life Member but I upgraded to that before my eyes were opened to the realities of their deceit. I do, however, use that status to try and change things from the inside.

Would have been easy to NOT get on the plane and make a statement about Reids politics.

It must have been a mistake whe Wayne came to Denver to share a stage with Sarah Brady after Columbine too.

Well, lets go get them. LaPierre should know better than to hob nob with Reid. No damn shooting range is worth compromising your principles. Reid sucked that money in to get that range to attempt to salvage his ass with the heavily conservative southern Utah Mormons. It is simply vote buying and LaPierre sucked into it. We need to frag LaPierre but good.

The problem here is not the NRA, Wayne LaPierre or Harry Reid. The problem is a system where federal dollars are used to construct a local park.

If you want a shooting park, go raise the money and build it....don’t ask Washington for an earmark using my money that I was saving to build my own shooting park!

I'm still an NRA member, but... not long ago I heard a well-known US Senator state publicly that GOA is the real friend of gunowners.

Who expects me to believe that Reid isn't a venal whore who will sell out on any issue to remain in office?

Who expects me to believe that gun control is not on the list of agenda items for Reid, probably right after amnesty?

"Gun control" defined, of course, as disarming as many people as possible except for Reid and his ilk with their borrowed skeet guns.
