Initial claims for state unemployment benefits rose 18,000 to a seasonally adjusted 460,000 (week ending 4/3/2010) the Labor Department said. The prior week was adjusted to reflect 442,000 initial claims versus the previously reported 439,000.
A Labor Department official attributed the rise in claims to seasonal volatility, mainly from the Easter holiday (a.k.a Easter Bunny) and noted there were shutdowns in two states. A holiday on March 31 in California (Cesar Chavez Day) also had an effect on claims, he said.
Wanted By The Department of Labor... Easter Bunny and Cesar Chavez.

Those pics at this blog nearly made me spit out my coffee.
Priceless.
"Boycott grapes." ROTFL.
That U.S. Labor Department official just gave bloggers, freepers, various alternative media, talk radio (and on and on) grand slams to hit repeatedly.
Uh, this is far beyond a laughing matter.
Ya better hope it does not get to the point where there are millions going hungry...With tens of millions now out of work, it could very well happen.
Remember that the criteria for judging these things has changed.
Rather than focusing on the unemployment rate, numbers of claims, etc., the liberals tell us that things would have been much worse without Porkulus and the enlightened policies of the Obama administration.
We’re supposed to talk about the numbers of jobs saved, not the numbers of jobs lost. We’re supposed to talk about where we would be without Porkulus spending allegedly saving so many jobs.
Apparently some idiot at the Dept. of Labor thought things funny enough to blame the rise in joblessness on Cesar Chavez Day of all things. Talk about searching for something - anything - on their part to blame things on...
The Obama regime is clearly on the lookout to blame rising unemeployment on whatever they can. What are they going to do when they don’t have holidays to blame things on?
Yes the economy is recovering, that is exactly why over 400 thousand people are losing their jobs EVERY WEEK.
The jobs saved/created ruse is nothing but subjectivity from the Obama administration in lieu of objective stats.
And the few stats available show jobs that are more often than not temporary and jobs saved for union workers and gov’t employees.
You are right. I was being sarcastic about how we’re supposed to talk about “jobs saved” because that’s the liberal party line on judging the economy and the job situation nowadays.
The liberals were outraged when unemployment was 5.4% at one point during the Bush administration. Too many left behind, yadda, yadda, yadda.
But now we’re not supposed to judge this administration and this president by the same criteria used to judge the former administration and president. I think the whole thing is absurd, but that’s how the liberals and MSM are covering this story.
BTW, it is kinda like a coach leading a college basketball team, a football team, whatever, to a horrible record at the end of the season.
The coach’s excuse? “Without me, this team would have done much worse.”
Just like Obama’s excuse.
I thought holidays spurred economic activity?
Just heard today, we’re about to have furloughs and I expect my health insurance rates to rise about $200 a month soon.
Thanks Obama!
“What are they going to do when they dont have holidays to blame things on?”
Well, then, there is always GEORGE BUSH.
You would think that if the offices were closed that the claims coouldn't be filed and the number of claims would be *lower*.
If you are working Obama has saved your job.
While the Census Bureau is hiring like mad to cover up the dismal employment numbers, unemployment continues to vastly outstrip the government’s ability to replace the private sector.
Wait until next month’s report when all the thousands of people in RI file their unemployment claims, no waiting period either. RI already has a 13% unemployment rate and with all the businesses closed due to the historic flooding, I hate to imagine what the new % will be
