SEIU has a new President. The unions executive committee elected health care organizer Mary Kay Henry as SEIUs first female president today, after now President Emeritus Andy Stern announced his resignation several weeks ago.
We havent written about the SEIU succession here, but count me as someone who didnt see this coming at first. It was widely assumed that SEIU Secretary Treasurer Anna Burger would naturally step into the presidency, having followed in Sterns footsteps for most of her career within SEIU. But the unions division and local leaders had other ideas. Mark Brenner of Labor Notes whom I never have quoted approvingly, and will likely never will again, aptly summed up what many SEIU leaders thought of Burger:
She has few of the benefits and most of the problems that Stern brings to the union, said Mark Brenner, director of the non-profit union network Labor Notes.
Pretty much. And once it became clear that Burger wasnt going to waltz into the presidency, Mary Kay Henry being the deft organizer she is saw an opening and put forth her own candidacy. And now shes the leader of a union of 2.2 million workers.
Henry pledged to take SEIU back to its organizing roots, and away from the political and electoral direction in which Stern took the union. Henry says SEIU will stay involved in its 2010 election plans, which is an odd thing to say, frankly, and is a big sign that SEIU wont be invested in the 2012 cycle.

No SEIU support for Obama and the Democrats? Ouch ...
LOL that didn’t take long.
Is she a Communist Party member?
She could be a lifelong republican but she’d still be a marxist.
First Stern and now Berger! This just doesn’t happen in union circles. The only explanation is that the FBI has something, the Justice Department under Holder holds the trump card, and to avoid embarrassing Obama, both have decided to retire.
She majored in urban studies and labor relations in college. She could have played college football at Tennessee with tough majors like that. She doesn’t have much of an education so now she wants to tell doctors how much they should be allowed to make.
After seeing the video, I suspected she was a lesbian (sorry for profiling but .... ). I’ve now read that she is a staunch supporter and activist in the fight for gay and lesbian rights, and is a founding member of SEIU’s gay and lesbian Lavender Caucus.
SSDD.

Mary Kay Henry
PRESIDENT, SERVICE EMPLOYEES INTERNATIONAL UNION (SEIU), CTW, CLC
SEIU President Mary Kay HenryMary Kay Henry was named one of the nation’s “Top 25 Women in Healthcare” for 2009 by Modern Healthcare. For nearly 30 years, Henry has represented healthcare workers at the Service Employees International Union, where she helped lead the fight to expand healthcare for millions of children and strengthen the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). Henry has devoted her life to helping America’s healthcare workers form unions, improve their jobs and the quality of care, and advocate for a more rational and humane health care system. Her faith and values as a practicing Roman Catholic led her to pursue union organizing as a vocation.
Her vision and leadership has helped pave the way to groundbreaking agreements between SEIU and hospital chains such as Beverly Enterprises, Catholic Healthcare West, Tenet, and HCA, and to the national Labor-Management Partnership at Kaiser Permanente, the nation’s largest HMO. In the Midwest, a strategic alliance between SEIU and Allina Hospitals and Clinics in Minnesota is centered on improving the quality of patient care, with caregivers now working side by side with management to solve problems.
Henry began working with SEIU in 1979 and rose to become a leader and chief healthcare strategist and was elected to the International Executive Board in 1996. In June 2004, she was elected to served as an International Executive Vice President of SEIU, leading the union’s efforts to build a stronger voice for healthcare workers. More than one million healthcare workers nationwide, including registered nurses, technicians, doctors, and hospital and clinic workers are united in SEIU Healthcare.
An active champion of healthcare reform, Mary Kay envisions a U.S. healthcare system that provides universal coverage and gives front-line caregivers a real voice in patient care. She is a member of the executive board of Families USA, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to the achievement of high-quality, affordable healthcare for all Americans. She was formerly a labor adviser to and member of the U.S. Catholic Conference of Bishops’ Subcommittee on Catholic Health Care.
Recognizing that today’s global economy demands a new and different model of labor-management relationships, Mary Kay is leading a national effort by SEIU to build new kinds of partnerships with hospital employers-partnerships that will improve the quality of patient care, strengthen the hospital’s competitive performance, and give workers a voice in decisions that affect care and working conditions. Mary Kay is also active in the fight for immigration reform and gay and lesbian rights. She is a founding member of SEIU’s gay and lesbian Lavender Caucus.

One thing I know about unions is that they’ve never done a damn thing to improve healthcare in this nation. Now they think they should run it?
Most of the SEIU members are janitors and cooks. Many didn’t even finish high school and that’s why they have the careers they have. Now they want to tell doctors how much they should make? These thugs will do for healthcare what they’ve done for the American auto industry.
lets tell the female dog to stay out of Michigan. The UAW,AFL-CIO AFSCME and many other unions have done a disservice to Michigan. You know anybody whom wants to buy a golf course that was built just for the UAW big dogs in Michigan. It is now for sale. Unions are killing America.
political Rhetoric so is she another Sophists.
I agree with everything written above. However, this MAY signal a shift from the rank and file that a Stern-backed protege did not win the election. All I’m saying is it bears watching to see if they take a different track.
The hardcore homosexual activists are banging on the doors...
Ya' think....?
Aren’t they broke? Didn’t they give all the dues to Obama?
What city will she live in?
She’s a lesbian. So, unless she actually killed some babies there will be nothing to find out.
Well, for starters, how is Henry with Planned Parenthood and NARAL?
