Obama Set To Kill Manned Space Exploration
Flopping Aces ^ | 06-16-10 | Curt

Any surprise that Obama's mediocrity rears its ugly head once again. This time by moving to kill the Constellation program, the program to get man on the moon...permanently, and then to mars.....how does he do it? As his Chicago upbringing has taught him

Constellation aimed to build upon what was arguably America’s greatest technological achievement, the first lunar landing of 1969, by launching new expeditions to the Moon and to Mars and worlds beyond. Mr Obama proposed in February that it should be scrapped because it was “over budget, behind schedule and lacking in innovation”, but he has met opposition in Congress, which has yet to approve his plan.The head of Nasa, Major-General Charlie Bolden -- an Obama appointee -- has now written to aerospace contractors telling them to cut back immediately on Constellation-related projects costing almost $1 billion (£690 million), to comply with regulations requiring them to budget for possible contract termination costs. The move has been branded a “disingenuous legal manoeuvre” and referred to Nasa’s inspector-general for investigation. “It’s bordering on arrogance by the Administration to boldly and brazenly go forward with this approach. It shows a blatant disregard for Congress,” said the Republican Congressman Rob Bishop, of Utah, whose constituency stands to lose thousands of jobs. Two weeks ago the Senate passed legislation that compels Nasa to continue work on Constellation unless Congress directs otherwise. That legislation is due to be signed into law by Mr Obama this month while Congress continues its deliberations over his proposal to cancel the current space space progamme.
~~~
Distinguished space veterans, including the first and last men to walk on the Moon, Neil Armstrong and Gene Cernan, have complained that the abandonment of Constellation will set America’s space capabilities on a “downhill slide to mediocrity”. They say that, while Mr Obama has outlined a vision for Nasa that includes sending people to Mars at some point, it lacks a concise plan for developing the rockets and spacecraft to get them there.
[snip]
Obama has gone out of his way to ensure everything this country stands for...innovation, excellence, pioneering...goes by the wayside. We are to be nothing but average. No better then the rest of the world and no worse.
This program requires all the traits that has made America great. It would allow us to explore the moon with new technology, investigate the origins of our universe all the while striving to get mankind onto our nearest planet.
His time grows short. He needs to cause as much damage as possible now -- people are catching on to him, and in a few months it will be harder for him get away with this crap.
I expect a foreign policy crisis soon. Our enemies know that this is a time when they can get away with almost anything: Obama's plate is full with Golf and Gulf. Things like North Korea, Israel, and Iran just aren't going to catch his attention.
The goal is to kill off America as a superpower.
You can’t have Global government with a superpower existing.
And you can’t have a superpower with a sound economy and thriving industrial base working.
Everything he’s done is to take us all down. The guy is a closet muslim, bisexual, foreigner, marxist. That’s why he hates this country so much. No one who loves their country sets about to destroy their country like he has, trying to pass it off as ‘saving’ the country.
its time to abolish nasa and replace it with more private space companies. nasa is a bureaucratic mess. It takes them $1billion to send a man into space which cost a private company $50 mil. $950 mil is better spend elsewhere
He is ridding the USA of “needless” accomplishments like being a technological superpower in the forefront of the arts & sciences, a sense of purpose, American uniqueness in a primitive and increasingly irresponsible and G-dless world. Who needs manned exploration when you are busy golfing or blaming the previous administration for your lack of governing or leadership. What counts is trying to turn the economy and nation around in a European sort of way, like Greece and Spain for example.
“Is he killing government manned space exploration or private manned space exploration or both?”
He’s trying to kill the return to moon program called Constellation.
Private entities have not orbited a single person yet. They are many years away from that. Obama favors this to take our astronauts to the space station instead of our astronauts riding Russian rockets as shuttle retires.
He offers nothing concrete to get beyond low earth orbit.
He wants to take five years to think about developing heavy lift rockets at NASA and explore “game changing” technology development.
Yes, he is killing NASA human spaceflight for all resonable purposes, and is set against returning to the moon.
He offers very long term promises of beyond low earth missions like visting an asteroid. And he mumbles about Mars. But of course there is nothing he proposes that will actually be built now.
Constellation was hardware being developed right now.
