Actually, it's the opposite; a weak signal drains batteries faster. A weak signal causes your phone to operate in a higher power mode, in an attempt to boost SNR, and that means you're chewing through your battery faster.

Likewise a connection that drops a lot will chew through your battery quickly because the phone kicks to high power mode when trying to establish connection to a cell.

Battery life is negatively impacted with poor reception.

Pardon, my bad! I read that you said lower reception uses less battery. Sorry, you are, of course, correct. Bad reception drains the battery!
