Alaska. The only place I've ever been a passenger landing in a 737 on gravel. Uphill. With about 37.3 ft at either end of the 'runway' for overrun before you needed those flotation devices that are pretending to be seat cushions.

And the floatplane guys thought the jet pilots had it easy.

Crazy flying is norm up there.

“Crazy flying is norm up there.”

Well, it’s not crazy. It’s just different than folks in the high density portions of the lower 48 states are used to. I’ve only flown a “gravel kit” once, but it worked like the book said it should. If you have ever flown up there (whether it’s Bellanca’s or Boeings), the operational standards make a great deal of sense.

One thing’s for sure, what works there wouldn’t work in the LA Basin. But the LA Basin is a very small area indeed, and strangely enough it is quite provincial compared to the rest of the aeronautical community.

Suffice to say that a pro-pilot adapts his technique to match the environment he operates within. It’s part of doing it for a living, and it ain’t really a big deal for those that have been around in aviation.
