Inception: Movie Review

Inception, the new movie by Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight, Memento) and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, is probably the best movie of the year.

But it is certainly not for everyone.

Nolan has become a master of new storytelling, and Inception is no exception. This movie is a mixture of Memento, with a touch of the Matrix and The Dark Knight mixed in.

The movie is based on the concept of extraction. Extraction is performed by memory experts, in this case Dom Cobb (Dicaprio) and Arthur (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), who is Cobb's key partner. There usual jobs entail invading a person's memories and dreams in order to steal valuable information.

But inception is a variant of this, and much harder. During an 'inception' procedure, you don't try to steal information...you try to implant it. This is much more difficult, because you have to make the target believe that they themselves came up with the foreign thought.

This movie is a mixture of Memento, with a touch of the Matrix and The Dark Knight mixed in.

Dark Knight: Check
Matrix: No Check
Memento: Big No Check

Guess I'll be skipping it.

They should have asked my wife for some tips!

Saw it last night at the midnight showing at the Drafthouse in Austin.

I dragged my lovely wife who hates going to midnight showings, but I convinced her based on the word of mouth.

It was a weird movie. I enjoyed watching it, but I'm not quite sure if I liked it yet; I'll have to see it again.

I think my biggest problem was accepting the dream states. They didn't seem like dreams, just other locations. I think the first Matrix movie did a better job of selling a bunch of actors running around in what was supposed to be a virtual reality. They just didn't have a dream like quality except for the occasional tremor that would knock things around.

I like a good thriller but I thought Dark Knight went beyond thrilling to out-of-control and uncomfortably manic and sinister. I did not enjoy it.

Anybody see this movie Inception? Does it have this same kind of kind of maniac feeling?

People are talking about this film all over the place. Friends, family members, others. I have no idea about the film but with all the excitement maybe I will take the family to see it. I have to check the movie ratings. If it is R than it will be a date movie for my wife and I. If it is PG than perhaps the older two can tag along.

Batman Begins was much better than the Dark Knight... IMO

If you didn’t like Memento or the Dark Knight, I would skip this movie. Like I said, it is excellent, but certainly not for the general public. And young kids probably won’t get it, and if they are too young they probably would get scared.

Thanks for the update. I did like Dark Knight, but did not see Memento. Just stating Dark Knight causes me NOT to take the kids to this movie. I did not take the kids to Dark Knight and would not allow them to watch it for at least three more years. Oldest child is 12.

Then you should definitely see it.

It's just a movie, and just an opinion.

I saw it this afternoon. Weird, but entertaining.

Good casting. Didn’t realize DiCaprio’s partner was the kid on Third Rock from the Sun. He’s very good.

This is a movie you definitely need to see more than once.. It is convoluted & complex. Dreams within dreams within dreams... special effects good. I am a fan of Decaprio (yes I know he is a lib & sucks but he also is an excellent actor IMO) I saw it yesterday at regular theater & will see it Sunday PM at IMAX. Cleveland(Westlake a suburb) just opened an IMax for commercial movies. We have had one in downtown Cleveland as part of Science center & those are the movies shown there - the shorts on science

Predators was enjoyable to me. A Rambo type roll for Adrien Brody.

Robert Rodriquiz does fun stuff and he collaborated with his former wife Elizabeth Avellan on this project(Inception), his next one coming out Machette, Danny Trejo stars in both. He has a fascinating past as a ex con who straightened out his life. My cousin does set work, art direction etc for both Rodriguiz & Avellan... At our family reunion over the fourth I got to see some interesting pix/videos etc. Of all the family there, I am the only one really into Cinema & he & I just chat away for hours. They did Sin City & Sin City2 is in development

Well I have now seen all at our theaters except for Cedar Lee which does a lot of independents - a couple there I have on list. Maybe next week

This movie is a mixture of Memento, with a touch of the Matrix and The Dark Knight mixed in.

Sounds more like a rip-off of Dreamscape (1984)

Regardless, I have no intention of seeing it...

My husband just dragged me unwillingly off to see it. 4 stars from me, 3 1/2 from him.

There are a lot of movies like Dark Knight, I won’t watch because of their violence and cruelty but that’s aren’t an issue in Inception. The violence is cartoonish, non-graphic. Dream guy aim takes bad guy aim to a new level.
