I would hope that someone confessing to having chosen, as a callow twenty-year-old, his friends not on the basis of their character (integrity, intelligence, humor, compatibility), but rather on the basis of whether or not they "fit" into his public persona (i.e., to create the "right" impression - on whom?) - i.e., to avoid being mistaken for a "sellout" - would later repudiate that mind-set.
