McDonald's job fair: Hundreds apply for 24 positions (Recovery Summer? Recession over?)

LEE COUNTY: It was easy to see just how tough the economy is as our cameras caught people at a local McDonald's looking for jobs. Hundreds of people applied Tuesday, and just two-dozen jobs are available.

Inside of a Cape Coral McDonald's Tuesday, there were more pencils and papers than there were combo meals.

Jessica Robinson is a single mom of two with another on the way. She's also a student and she was applying to work at the fast food restaurant.

"I'm actually going to school for management, so that would be awesome. But I'll probably start out as a cashier, whatever they want me to, I'll take whatever," she said. "I just need a job."

And she's not alone.

Managers there said crowd coming in to apply is becoming more diverse. With a high unemployment rate all across Southwest Florida, places like McDonald's are a lot more people coming to apply.

"You are seeing applicants that you may not have seen before - people that were used to being in the real estate industry or construction industry or things of that nature," Tim Frederic, with McDonald's.

Six Cape Coral McDonald's restaurants held a hiring day, looking for people from management to crew.

And even before Tuesday, Frederic says the crowds have been unusually large.

"Our application flow is very high. Oftentimes it is difficult to give them a quick interview on the spot, which is why we decided you know what, rather than do that let's do one specific big event," he said.

For some applying, this could be their first job. But for others, it's a chance to return, and possibly work towards their future.

"I worked at KFC for three-and-half-years and I didn't like it back then, but now that I'm older that was the best time of my life," said Robinson.

My late father said during the depression "you couldn't buy a job" and it looks like we're almost there again.

Here in FL people cannot find jobs. So many of our jobs were tied to the housing industry, and as that has collapsed, people are desperate for just anything. I know tradespeople that are practically starving.

Our small businesses are dying down here. We’ve actually been feeding people who have no food, friends are losing their homes, it’s horrid.

I’ve never been in a situation before like this.

And we knew before Democrats passed their Stimulus bill they were not using valid economic principles, Democrats conned themselves and their constituents, not 1 Republican voted for it.

I was in high school during Jimmy Carter, and I could not find a job to pay for date money for the life of me. The typical reply was “sorry we're not hiring”, or they would take your application and stick it on a pile of others a foot thick. Even McDonalds. I never did get called back for an interview. Odd jobs, like mowing lawns, painting houses, and hanging weekly store ads on door knobs, was how I made the little money I had.

I see the same thing happening with today's young, and those that have lost their jobs.

Sounds like she’s managing her own life perfectly. Single mom, no job, more kids on the way.

And why sell yourself short, honey? Why be content to be hired as a manager with no experience when you could just be the CEO? Naive fool.

One of the jobs I applied for recently, there was one position open, and possibly a second, and over 200 people taking the employment test. The people that were there were the ones who passed the first screening of applications that were sent in and were invited to take the test. And it wasn’t the only one I had been to like that recently. It’s a VERY tough environment out there. I made it to the top ten of people taking that test, so I may get an interview out of it.
