Researchers are scratching their heads over the massive number of college dropouts. During a five-year period, more than $9 billion was spent by state and federal governments to support students at four-year colleges and universities who left school before their sophomore year, according to the American Institutes for Research (AIR). California, Texas and New York led the nation in government spending on students who dropped out before their second year.
Every fall, first-year college students receive significant funding from colleges, states and the federal government, said Dr. Mark Schneider, an AIR vice president. And every spring, hundreds of thousands of students decide not to return to college.
When students enroll in a college or university and drop out before the second year, they have invested time and money only to see their hopes and dreams of a college degree dashed. Dr. Schneider is the former commissioner of the federal National Center for Education Statistics.
These costs can be heartbreaking for students and their families, but the financial costs to states are enormous, he noted.

Self-paced internet education should be considered by more... It gives students the freedom to balance the needs of family, work and education.
The dropout rate in the freshman year has always been high. The question is do they stay permanently out, or do they come back later and complete their degree? I had to join the Navy and get the VA benefits to continue 4 years later.
Maybe they should just start the support for students in their sophomore year? It would be interesting if there were more statistics on what the reasons were for students leaving. I don’t think college is the answer for everyone, nor does it necessarily supply the skills a worker needs.

I work for a college and know the answer to this one. They are registering mass amounts of illegals and anyone else eligible for a free ride just to get the fed money knowing very well most will just drop out.
This article missed a major point. The attitude among the entitlement generation to view college as just a place to drink and party rather than a place to prepare them for a career.
Money down the drain when there are other students that are financially strapped with great grades that could really use those funds.
