Love this gal...
That old song affects a lot of surprising people, Koreans love to sing it. It’s so wistful and full of yearning.
It’s the song of a people striking out into the wilderness, longing for the only home they ever knew, but in the knowledge that they still had to push on. It’s the story of the Scotch-Irish diaspora, out of the Shenandoah Valley into which they settled to be out of the reach of persecution by the various State Churches, over the mountain and beyond. It’s a frontier song, uniquely southern but uniquely midwestern and western American as well, because that’s what they sought out, embraced and became.
I’ve been known to break out into that one myself, when crossing that river on I-81 going up the valley and back toward home in NC.
Thanx for making me homesick for a Northern Virginia that is no longer there. (Sniff .... Sniiiff .... )
“Oh Shenandoah” was performed by Celtic Woman. If you ever get a chance to seem the group in concert, go. They are outstanding.
