Not so different from Kosovo and the American Southwest. Both areas were once very sparsely populated, then a specific group came in and improved the land and the opportunities, and that became a lure for large numbers of a different ethnic group from poor, bordering nations.

Long. Was a time the "palestinians" were Jews living in the levant under the mandate, the Arabs we call palestinians today largely South Syrians, prevented from returning to their homes by the Nakba. I guess the French didn't want them back. Lots of Egyptians too
