There has been a lot of talk about Osama Bin Laden's million-dollar hideout and how he has been living in luxury for the past six years. I'm sorry, but look at the place. It looks like dump.

I had been thinking the same thing. I expected to see lavish decorations and the latest in terrorist chic. What I saw, however, was a lot of cheap furnishings and very, very basic finish work.

He should have used Mexicans.

+1 - Don’t understand the rehtoric on this, suggesting it was worth that amount. Not even close. A million dollars would buy you much more than that (especially over there).

I’ve seen better quality construction in Tijuana.

I think the Million included protection and bribes to the neighbors.

Mexico is a much, much wealthier country than Pakistan. But consider this, in a country where tens of millions of people will never save up enough to buy a concrete block, this guy owned THOUSANDS of them, had steel fencing, concertina wire, expensive automobiles on site, and guards.

It beats a cave.
OBL hated everything Western, so that doesn't leave much in the way of creature comfort.

I'm with you - no way that was a million dollar anything...especially there - where construction workers earn fifty cents an hour...

When we lived in Saudi, we joked about the construction. Everything they built looked like an old rundown ruin when completed.

IIRC the area was pretty vacant when it was built and filled in since. I'm sure all the high walls and other security features upped the cost far above the average Pakihut. Though it seems pretty bold to build it that close to the capitol and stay there 5 or 6 years I'm sure they wanted it to match the surrounding buildings somewhat. Building a Saudi palace might have been a little too conspicuous.

In that part of Pakistan, “luxury” probably refers to indoor plumbing.

I think that million dollar price tag includes a lot of hush money to the Pakistani security services.
