You know what a true insult from comedian Don Rickles would be? It would be if you appeared on a stage with Rickles and did NOT receive an "insult" from the "Merchant of Venom."
However, many media websites seem to be unaware of Rickles' stock in trade. They are crowing over the fact that they believe Don Rickles delivered serious insults to Bristol and Sarah Palin during a visit of the former to the Tonight Show last Thursday where the comedian was one of the guests. As you can see in this video (and below the fold), Rickles "insults" were relatively mild compared to the zingers he directed towards President Ronald Reagan on stage during his second inauguration in 1985. And the reaction from The Gipper was sheer delight at the "insults."
Yet here we have such sites as Raw Story and andPOP taking the Rickles insults as if they were some sort of serious political commentary. Raw Story leads off with a headline that could also describe a Rickles encounter with anybody on a stage: "Don Rickles makes fun of Bristol Palin to her face."

Glad to see that Rickles is still doing his thing. The guy is HILARIOUS!
If Rickles didn’t attack it would be insulting.
Back in the day, Bob Newharts wife wanted to see one of Rickles shows. Bob wasnt too thrilled but took her anyways.
When Don saw Bob and his wife, he said” theres that stuttering prick Newhart and his New Jersy Slut wife”
So...Rickles was being himself....
Rickles has had an incredible career, he’s a real link to a time when stars were actually talented and funny.
I kept waiting for him to insult her. I think he stopped after the crowd’s reaction to his line “because she could lose”.
You could always get a good healthy dose of Rickles at all the Dean Martin Roasts.
I remember a story about what Rickles did to Sinatra, back in the 50’s.
Rickles told Frank that he was seeing a girl and wanted to impress her, so Don was wondering I’d Frank could stop by and say, ‘Hi’.
Sinatra said he’d be happy to do so.
So when Sinatra walked by Rickles table and saw Don talking with a girl, he stopped by and said, ‘Hi’.
To which Rickles replied, ‘C’mon Frank, can’t you see I’m busy. I’ll talk to you later, okay?’
Saw Rickles at a small club. Yes, the venom flowed...but afterwards...you’d swear he was your father or grandfather and one of the kindest people on earth.
I saw it Bristol handled herself very well and Rickles was Rickles! What in the HELL is the big deal with the Fags, freaks and fairies? Pissing themselves every time a Palin comes on TV.
I miss the days of the Friars’ Roasts. That was real comedy..and improv. I loved Rickles but my absolute favorite is and always will be Jonathan Winters.
That whole bunch was ruthless and never pulled any punches with each other. The fact that guys like Sammy Davis Jr, Nipsey Russell, and Flip Wilson were black didn’t mean they got any shelter.
The last time I saw Rickles in a semi regular role was on the Bernie Mac show.
Hopefully, some of your favorites will be there!
I didn’t see the show but read that Rickles was nicer to Bristol than was Leno...so that some thought Rickles was “insulting” is a surprise.
I remember Rickles back when he was starting out at a gin mill called the "Blue Mirror' in DC. Same schtick!
Rickles has always been an equal-opportunity insulter
I sometimes find myself wishing he wouldn't do that, but apparently he has mastered the Texas rule of "Smile when you say that, pardner."
If Bristol knows anything about Rickles, she'll probably chuckle at making the list.
