If you haven't already, this website will show you how to drill a shallow well in your backyard with PVC pipe, assuming that you don't live on bedrock. If you don't want to put a pump on it, you can use a smaller piece of PVC with a cap on the end to bring up the water. The water table in my back yard is about 20', but the drought in Texas is starting to drop it some.
