The problem with this is that (assuming we have an election in 2012 which I believe is seriously in doubt) legally Obama is not on any ballot anywhere. We vote for nameless "electors."

Something need not be practical to work in politics. (Obama comes to mind.) The political damage caused by being excluded from the ballot just because he won't provide a simple document is too big a question mark for people to give him a pass on it a second time around. If he concedes a state because he won't give a copy of his original birth certificate, he's toast politically. This political reality will be reflected in the electoral college later.

Interesting perspective. It's not entirely accurate, but it raises a good point. Obama's name is legally certified by the various secretaries of state to be printed on ballots. But we are voting for electors and not directly for the specified candidate. The candidate appoints his electors. If said candidate is ineligible, so are his electors.
