Survival during social chaos

When tough times come, you’ll likely discover that people today, overall, are not as resilient as they were in times past. For many of us, our grandparents generation included a higher percentage of self-reliant rural folks who both ‘made do’ on less while growing and raising their own food. Today, most people are far removed from the land and the routine of being responsible for supplying their own food; many even have a dangerous government-dependent mentality of entitlement. Fact is, the morality that both sustained and restrained previous generations during tough times is not as widely embraced in this present population.

I want to highlight this statement in this article:

"Today, most people are far removed from the land and the routine of being responsible for supplying their own food; many even have a dangerous government-dependent mentality of entitlement."

I would say that this mindset cuts across many social, political and economic lines. Many here know that I have been posting 'Prepper' and preparedness post for sometime and I've seen plenty of post from fellow Freepers who consider themselves to be as conservative as the next guy and yet they see prepping as something for the 'tinfoil hat' crowd and yet only in the last forty years or so has not keeping some food storage become the norm.

Oh, yes, I'm totally down with all this, but wouldn't it have been nice if we had the guts to kick teeth to prevent?

"Just saying"

When you live in a degenerate society there isn’t any preventing the ultimate collapse; it collapses of necessity under the weight of it’s own degeneracy.

Yeah, I've read about that, still, always the violent optimist in me wishes for a different path.

“Fact is, the morality that both sustained and restrained previous generations during tough times is not as widely embraced in this present population.”

I’m not sure the writer of the article knows just how spoiled we are. Food shortage leading to social chaos? It will take far less than that to have social chaos. Just pull TV, cellphones, internet, and radio (by pulling the electricity plug) and you will get social chaos way before people get hungry.

I just bought my first tractor and added a deck to the place. I just had the lumber delivered for an 8x12 building I’m putting up this weekend.

Yeah, we expect it to get really bad. The country does not have the character it did in the 1930’s.

” chaos. Just pull TV, cellphones, internet, and radio (by pulling the electricity plug) “

Gives whole new meaning to “I’ll just DIE if you take my cell phone away!!”, doesn’t it??

There will be a lot of deaths in the larger, liberal cities. The government handouts won't be there. People will quickly realize government is not God, and it's manna was poison. They'll be totally lost.

Thanks for the ping.

"...many even have a dangerous government-dependent mentality of entitlement."

When I think of prepping it naturally leads to thoughts of those who do not prep and those who do not take personal responsibility. That leads to visions of the thousands of Katrina zombies walking the flooded byways of New Orleans without so much as a recycled soda bottle of tap water to drink.

They are still out there by the tens of thousands in every population center in the country. If anything, this administration has intentionally done more to inculcate an increased sense of dependancy than to encourage self reliance.

I think it’s coming, too. I have food, water, ammo and some cash stashed away. Then I think back to power outages during hurricanes and I didn’t see chaos. I sometimes feel like I’m over reacting and I need to put on a tin foil hat.

And there will be those that will leave the big cities and come streaming out into the rural areas cuz we gots da food!

Just thinking about food, the concept of what is “safe” has been left up to the gov and manufacturers so much so that people have no idea what is safe to eat if they are left to their own devices. I’ve seen people throw out hundreds of dollars worth of food because it passed the freshness date. How bizarre.

Of course if people are hungry enough they will eat anything but the ignorance of basic food principles is staggering.

I saw a show once where a chef went to an inner city school and quizzed the high schoolers:

Where does butter come from? most answered: peanuts

Where does cheese come from? most answered: macaroni

Hey someone has to stand on the bridge waiting for FEMA to bring them a bottle of water, a MRE and a warm blanket so the Network Achors have their money shot. It's just sad for me to think that there are people right her on FR that will be standing among them.

We have to remember that as times get worse more and more people can’t afford to store food.

Then again, I believe most people are either naive or simply don’t believe a crash is going to be that bad. They don’t read articles like this one. The highlight of their evening is watching Fat Nancy Grace dancing.

I sometimes feel like I’m over reacting and I need to put on a tin foil hat.

"A prudent man foresees the difficulties ahead and prepares for them; the simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences." (Proverbs 22:3)

If that trouble does arrive, you'll be much better off. If that trouble does not arrive, you'll still be much better off. It's a win/win situation.

Inedible, I’d imagine...

I’ve heard it said that most Americans are so helpless and ignorant that we would starve to death standing next to a cow in a field of ripe wheat.

It should be clear to all that the world’s economy is on life support and the doctors are all ‘quacks’! Sooner or latter the spinning plates are going to start to tumble and there is going to be on hell of a mess!

What kind of a mess you ask, well I think that we are in for something like the collapse of Argentina ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yerKMQc7-w&feature=grec_index )but on a global scale. Additionally I think we will see a much more violent version. As recent events show (Flash Mobs, UK riots, etc)we have a larger entitlement minded population and a the US has a much more violent and armed population than Argentina. I see many many small business wiped out by flash mob looting, and see rape, robbery and murder for murder sake. Many of these ‘yutes’ will think no more about killing you than most people think about stepping on a roach. That will be the test of many. Most preppers I know are Christian people and they will hesitate to do what they might have to do to stop the ‘yutes’. On the other hand the ‘yutes’ won’t think twice nor lose a minute of sleep, in fact they will smile and laugh about it.

Think of this quote which is one of my favorites:

“Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: The Siege of AR-558 (#7.8)” (1998)
Quark: Let me tell you something about Hew-mons, Nephew. They’re a wonderful, friendly people, as long as their bellies are full and their holosuites are working. But take away their creature comforts, deprive them of food, sleep, sonic showers, put their lives in jeopardy over an extended period of time and those same friendly, intelligent, wonderful people... will become as nasty and as violent as the most bloodthirsty Klingon. You don’t believe me? Look at those faces. Look in their eyes.

Now go look at some of the videos of the riots in the UK and of some of the flash mobs here in the US and look into there eyes.

For those who are just starting or are old hands at prepping you may find my Preparedness Manual helpfull. You can download it at:

http://www.tomeaker.com/kart/preparedness1i.pdf

For those of you who haven’t started already it’s time to prepare almost past time maybe. You needed to be stocking up on food guns, ammo, basic household supplies like soap, papergoods, cleaning supplies, good sturdy clothes including extra socks, underwear and extra shoes and boots, a extra couple changes of oil and filters for your car, tools, things you buy everyday start buying two and put one up.

As the LDS say “When the emergency is upon us the time for preparedness has past.”

Or as the bible says: A prudent man sees danger and takes refuge, but the simple keep going and suffer for it.
NIV Proverbs 22:3

Lastly this for the doubters and the scoffers.

“There is no greater disaster than to underestimate danger.

Underestimation can be fatal.”
