They were never far right---They were socialists. The Nazi flag was red to attract socialists to the party. In fact, in Mein Kampf, Hitler wrote this: "The NSDAP [The Nazis] and the DSP [The German Socialist Party] had arisen with the SAME ULTIMATE AIMS [emphasis mine], yet absolutely independent of each other.
