This video (via Leslie of Temple of Mut) of Rick Santorum has made the rounds as evidence that Santorum is hostile to the Tea Party movement.
The key sentence, in which he expresses and intention to vocally, publicly oppose the Tea Party, is ambiguous. Was he saying he would oppose the Tea Parties, or only those in the Tea Parties who in his view are distorting conservatism?
Regardless, I find the dialogue troubling. I would describe myself as a conservative with a libertarian streak, and I think that description probably would be used by a lot of Tea Party supporters. If Santorum plans on fighting the influence of libertarianism in the conservative movement, then I dont see how he is a Tea Party choice.
I also think Santorum was a shorter, engaging in an Obama-like straw man argument asserting that libertarians believe in no government.
There also is an aspect, which I dont think is much of a negative, of Santorums personality showing through. Santorum in the Senate has been described as making Newt Gingrich [look] like Miss Manners. You can see it in this video.

What he is saying is that there is a difference of opinion between pro life conservatives and pro choice libertarians whose credo is non aggression except against the weakest among us. The latter are a joke.
Libertarians are leftists who share conservative economics, they are a Trojan horse that can destroy conservatism if they succeed in promoting leftist social liberalism and goals.
The Libertarian party represents the Libertarian ideal, and we can see those goals in it’s party platform.
Never trust a short libertarian.
The way this guy could win would be to put emphasis on putting health care on the free market. Talk about how the free market reduced costs for car insurance and phones and how it would do the same for health insurance. Many many people do NOT have health insurance in this country, and being that so many are unemployed, just getting a check up is a huge problem. And these people will vote for our first foreign born Islamic President again on that item alone. It absolutely amazes me how none of the so called Repubs are tackling this issue. I do not like ANY of these idiots the Repub party is shooting forth. Romney is Obama Mormon version. Newt is a psycho. That leaves Santorum, the only TRUE Conservative who I always liked. He has GOT to focus on that health care issue because not only will it prick up the ears of the undecided, but it will also remove our first foreign born Islamic Presidents #1 salvo. Healthcare is JUST like car insurance. Only you can’t get an oil change because of 10,000 Government regulations and free market oppression. Remember when your car insurance use to cost 1000s of bucks every year especially if you has an accident? Today thanks to free market they ask you to NAME your own price! THEY BEG! Institute “pay you lose” like they do in England for lawsuits and free market Capitalism and even illegals will be able to afford health insurance.
He said no such thing.
However, he did just say in the video that he didn't want the GOP nomination.
What does this have to do with the Libertarian party?
Oh sorry, I thought we were divining what Santorum meant. Or said. Or meant to say.
“However, he did just say in the video that he didn’t want the GOP nomination.”
Please let me know at what point in the video he says this.
I was trying to be funny and FAILED miserably.
There's no doubt that both the (l)ibertarian and Social Conservative wings of the GOP need to find accommodation. If we don't we'll both lose, and lose big.
It was intended to be the government of the States, and was not intended to involve itself in the day-to-day affairs of individual citizens.
I think “librarians” in headline was meant to be Libertarians... And I too am suspect of Tea Part Libertarians - especially those that would think highly of Ron Paul... if Rick Santorum is against them, I would have to concur.
That is absolutely correct. There wasn't even a Federal law against murder until the 20th century.
It appears Santorum takes the position that the Federal Government should influence the lives of citizens on a day-to-day basis...and since that is ALREADY THE CASE he would have it influence our lives HIS way.
Whether HIS way or the COMMIE way, I don't like it.
I much prefer a candidate committed to devolving federal power back to the states.
Yes, he has it wrong. Libertarians beleive in no norm of morals or ethics in the public square and in private enterprise. I take that back. Some are into morals - amorality or morality up-side down. Some celebrate political correctness where evil is pushed on society and religious freedom is banned by private enterprise and government.
Libertarians permit the government under the original constitution.
However, Santorum would be a great, old fashioned King of England where he could dictate all he wants and beleives to everyone in the country and world.
The title doesn’t make sense.
It reads: Rick Santorum shortens libertarians
It seems pretty clear he is referring to the libertarian movement within the Tea Party. He said the movement within the Republican party and Tea Party trying to change conservatism. He didn't oppose the Tea Party but opposed it changing.
This is laughable. He’s been pretty silent in “vocally opposing” Tea Parties. Bob
The Tea Party has not once, at any time that I am aware of, take a position on a social issue...for or against.
The irony of it, to me, is that we’re frequently debating who should be the candidate of the Republican Party in terms that refuse to recognize and differentiate the divisions of authority and responsibility between the state and national governments that make us a republic.
