Fair to Compare Mormons for Romney to Blacks for Obama?

In this weekend’s Nevada caucus, the first primary contest with a large percent of Mormon voters (26% of participants), Mitt Romney won handily by 50 percent of the total. But he strikingly won 90 percent of the Mormon vote.

During the presidential campaign of Barack Obama, African-Americans were criticized for blindly following Obama because of race. Similar charges are not being leveled, at least not to the same extent, against Mormon voters for Romney.

There is no question that anti-Mormon bias is going to be a factor among some Republican voters when it comes to Romney. But I’m also interested in whether and how the close hewing of Mormon voters to Romney as a candidate will be explored with the same persistence than the black vote for Obama did.

I’m not very concerned about Mormons themselves but I do think its odd that Obama has faced tougher questions about religion than Romney has.

Once Romney wins the nomination (if he wins it, and sadly it seems that may happen) you can be 100% certain that the questions will come hard and fast. They (the media and the Left PAC groups) are keeping their powder dry, and once the nominee is chosen the firestorm that will come will break records. Mark my words. It will go down in history as one of the fiercest political conflagrations. Why should Obama/Left/Media attack Romney now? Or, for that matter, any of the other Republican candidates? The four of them are doing such a grand job tearing each other down in public, and as the adage says when you see your enemies destroying each other the best thing to do is to stand back and watch. Now, once the nominee is chosen the entire rubric has changed, and the attacks from the left will commence. There are attacks for Romney, for Santorum and for Gingrich (I don't think anyone has bothered with Paul since he is but a joke). The questions about religion and Romney will come flying in if Romney is selected as the Republican Candidate.

Until then there will be no tough questions.
