Adelson Cutting Off Gingrich? MARCH 14, 2012 B ED MORRISSEY
(snip) CNBCs John Harwood. Harwood told Rachel Maddow last night that the main funder of Newt Gingrichs super-PAC, casino owner Sheldon Adelson, has written his last check for Gingrich in this race:
Greg Sargent spoke with the head of the super-PAC, Rick Tyler, who acknowledged that hes in for some rough days ahead:
(snip) The super PACs operations have been largely funded by billionaire casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, whose money has effectively kept Gingrichs candidacy afloat.
John Harwood of the New York Times last night quoted a friend of Adelson saying that he had written his last check.
I just checked in with Rick Tyler, the head of the pro-Newt super PAC . Asked if he could continue operating without Adelsons money, Tyler conceded: Fundraising will be challenging.
But Tyler vowed that the PAC would continue operating as best it could as long as Gingrich stayed in the race. Asked why Gingrich should continue after two losses that seem to render the cause hopeless, Tyler said the pro-Gingrich forces were betting on a contested convention, and would take it all the way to August.
The campaign itself probably cant do much better at fundraising after the losses yesterday. Conservative activists have been demanding consolidation behind Rick Santorum for several weeks, and their argument got a lot stronger after last night. If Adelson cuts off the super-PAC, Gingrich wont have many resources to run a competitive campaign.
The question will be whether Adelson himself acknowledges that. Hes already been rumored to have pledged to support Romney if Gingrich didnt win the nomination. He might just decide to move his very large fundraising capability to Team Romney now and focus on defeating Santorum in the primaries.

Crazy. You’d think if he was supporting Gingrich that he’d move his money to Santorum.....
This race is getting crazier by the day.........hold on......
If there’s bad news for a Republican, we can count on John Harwood to make sure it gets heard. And heard. And heard.
I prefer Newt to the other two, but I’m in the minority obviously. Newt came on strong but couldn’t keep it going. That’s politics.
Since Adelson made his money in gambling, I suspect he’s looking to get offshore gambling legalized in the States.
He’s more likely to get that from Romney than from Santorum.
Adelson finds Santorum’s brand of social conservatism unpalatable. Adelson is an evil manipulator.
He is being investigated for violating federal bribery laws. This is the guy who provided a lifeline to Gingrich to checkmate Santorum.
Things are happening. Fast. Behind the scenes. For sure, this Rick fellow must be stopped, is the thinking of RINO Elit-dom.
Romney: $7.1 million
Gingrich: $1.8 million
Santorum: $1.3 million
Crunch time. Time for a Santorum Money Bomb, lots of mom and pop donations coming out the wazoo from around the nation from Alaska to the Florida Keys, from the Maine-Canadian border to San Ysidro, California, averaging $40-50, just like Ronald Reagan did. Hundreds of THOUSANDS of them. There are many more of US them THEM. We can topple this Goliath, no doubt about it. But here is where it gets really tricky!!
That's what it comes down to.
For the most part, when/if the Paul and Gingrich supporter move, they'll move to Romney.
What a said generation for the GOP.
It's down to a couple of wing-nuts.
Alas, the 2016 primaries are but 4 years away.
This family has been doing its part for Rick!
The evil Adelson might continue funding Gingrich just to make sure he splits the Tea Party and male vote with Santorum and allow Romney to sneak through the breach to victory. This is exactly what occurred in WA, MI, and OH.
It's also the thinking of the vast majority of GOP primary electorate.
If Gingrich drops, all of his votes will go to Romney. Same for Paul.
Thanks everybody for what I wasn’t seeing....all makes sense....
You might be correct with respect to the Paul supporters but internal polling in recent races suggest that if Gingrich drops off, his voters (mainly Tea Partiers and males) will migrate to Santorum.
“For the most part, when/if the Paul and Gingrich supporter move, they’ll move to Romney”
Not this Newt supporter. While I am huge for Newt because I believe he is far superior to Rick or Romney in his ability to lay out and persuasively articulate a bold plan for restoring limited government and prosperity, I do not trust Romney at all. The biggest fear I have with Romney is Supreme Court nominees. I have no faith at all that he will make good appointments, and there may be two or more of them in the next presidential term. I also think Romney’s tax plan is pathetic.
Got any science to back that up or is that just wishful thinking?
The as-yet unlearned lesson of this primary season is that money doesn’t beat Rick Santorum.
Values voters aren’t swayed by big bucks.
I’m thinking perhaps the best way to keep Romney out is for Newt to stay in all events with proportional delegate allocation. However, in winner take all states, I think Newt should throw in with Santorum and try to beat Romney in those states.
I hear a lot of people say this on FR, but not out in the “real world.” They are looking for someone to beat Obama, preferably not Romney. They will move to Santorum. I cannot prove it either. But the invective against Santorum does not seem that widespread, except among the GOP-E and liberals.
My radar goes way up when someone who says that the Paul voters will go with Romney under any circumstances. Ever run into one? They are all Paul all the time. If he isn’t running, they aren’t voting.
