Nope, they had two old British carriers that they purchased and refit and then operated for many years.

One, the The INS Viraat was the old British "Hermes" that was used in the Falklands War and sold to the Indians in 1986. It was reift and named the Viraat is still operational and will be decommissioned when this carrier is commissioned.

The Viraat operates a wing of from 12-18 Sea Harriers.
