I was reading an interview of my Dad’s cousin - a WWII vet. In talking about food he said the rations were edible. But as a newbie in Europe he couldn’t figure out why he could score so many extra rations with pork.
Until a few weeks in and going along roads with dead Germans in the ditches, and the pigs feasting. (He started giving up his pork rations as well!)
Although in a situation like WW2 and if you were Jewish, I am sure in a combat environment you had to suck it up a few times because if I recall correctly C-Rats were Bacon, Pork Loaf, More Pork Loaf, Sausages, and Pork Loaf.
