Engineers Union: Immigration Bill ‘a Cruel Betrayal of American Workers’

The union representing technical and professional engineers today announced its opposition to the immigration bill, S. 744, warning that it sells American workers and students “down the river.”

In a letter to the Senate, the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers (IFPTE) calls the bill “a cruel betrayal of American workers.” …

IFPTE says the amendment eliminates the requirement to prioritize hiring equally qualified American workers and “creates a loophole” to allow employers to fire American workers and replace them with lower-paid foreign workers. …

Till now I have never heard of this union. I’m in silicon valley, seems like they’d be all over it.

Nor have I. They claim to have been around since 1918, on their website; started as the IFDU (International Federation of Draftsmen’s Unions) apparently.

I dunno whether to wish them well.

At the very least, they don’t seem to have been representing such workers very well, at least until they finally decide to take a stand on crimmigration. But it appears to be too little, too late.
