When liberty is taken away by force it can be restored by force. When it is relinquished voluntarily by default it can never be recovered.
Dorothy Thompson
When researching the author, I found another quote that's been used by Helen Thomas to justify her hate of George W. Bush in a 2006 book. I believe I'll appropriate it for my own use:
"No people ever recognize their dictator in advance. He never stands for election on the platform of dictatorship. He always represents himself as the instrument [of] the Incorporated National Will. ... When our dictator turns up you can depend on it that he will be one of the boys, and he will stand for everything traditionally American. And nobody will ever say 'Heil' to him, nor will they call him 'Führer' or 'Duce.' But they will greet him with one great big, universal, democratic, sheeplike bleat of 'O.K., Chief! Fix it like you wanna, Chief! Oh Kaaaay!'"
Dorothy Thompson, 1935, on the occasion of being forced out of Hitler's Germany for her writing.
“Once liberty is lost, it is lost forever.” - John Adams
OK, I’ve not found anything questioning her sanity but I can see where she is questionable on some political fronts since she self-identifies as a pacifist. I also see where she was somewhat a libertine in her personal life, having three husbands. The quotes are still interesting and, at a minimum, a launching point for conversation about the quote rather than its author.
violence is rarely the answer, but when it is, its the only answer
Thought provoking.....
