I think at least part of this is the emergence of the home video market. When the major studios controlled the theater distribution chain they could pretty much dictate their own terms.

It isn't just because they're labelled as Christian. A lot of people are looking to avoid the glorified violence and over-stimulating orgies to every imaginable vice, that emulate comic books and video games. The same thing has happened with TV choices, music, and books.

I don't know if it's a majority of people looking for something better. It's probably enough to support an industry, especially since movies the theaters won't show can be seen on DVD.
