I’m running exactly the same laptop with 4 gig of ram and I run some heavy duty stuff. Use the MSCONFIG to turn off most of what is starting at boot, most of it is not needed anyway. This is not a processor or OS problem, it is a problem with all of the crapware that gets put into background processing when you install things like google, yahoo and a lot of other apps of that type.
Everybody should know that command. Very helpful.
Go to the Start button and in the search programs and files window type in MSCONFIG and in the utility that starts you can choose, in the Startup tab, which programs you want to run automatically at startup.

First do what Pox said ,, then download “Spybot Search and Destroy” from Filehippo.com ,, put it in expert/advanced mode and then use it’s “Startup Tools” to clean up your system...
