Excellent! I was in Spain at the time that he died, and it appears that he was a great hero to the Spanish left because he had lived for some time in Barcelona. All sorts of ghastly editorials came out in the local press, gushing about “Gabo,” as he was known.
But I was pleased to see that there were a couple of opinion pieces in the (conservative) press, such as La Razon, that pointed out that he was just like any other leftist intellectual and had ridden the politically correct wave to the top more for his politics than for his writing.
Garcia Marquez was a great fan of Fidel Castro and practically any leftist dictator throughout Latin America and the world. A Cuban politician cause a lot of comment after she was quoted as saying she hoped that “Gabo” would be there to meet Fidel in Hell...soon!
One pit over from Ted Kennedy (D-HELL) and Saul Alinsky.
