New Exotic Particle Could Help Explain What Holds Matter Together
Live Science ^ | October 14, 2014 | Kelly Dickerson

A new exotic particle has been hiding out amidst the gobs of data collected by the world's largest atom smasher, physicists have discovered.

The new particle, called Ds3*, is a meson — a type of unstable particle made of one quark and one antiquark. Quarks are subatomic particles and are the most basic building blocks of matter that make up protons and neutrons. They're held together by the strong interaction, or strong force, that is one of the four fundamental forces in nature. (Electromagnetism, weak interaction and gravity are the other three.) No stable form of matter would exist without the strong interaction holding it together

A new exotic particle has been hiding out amidst the gobs of data collected by the world's largest atom smasher, physicists have discovered? And you have no transcendent, incredibly imaginative, mind-blowing name for this new particle? Ds3*. You really do have a sense of humor, after all.

Well, I can't say I'm surprised. You scientists, journalists just l-o-o-o-v-e to concoct these truly exciting, wholly disappointing, diametrically untrue polar opposite names for these exotic items that never live up to your hype. Remember "The God Particle"? Well, as nothing at all came of it having been discovered,(except for the Nobel Prize for their discoverers) how can you come up with a name for this new object of compelling wonder and enthrallment without feeling like a second grader who wet his pants? You think anyone is going to care when this this thing discovered even if you called it the 'Entire Meaning to Life' particle? I think not.

You just did yourself in coming up with these impossible to attain names and now whatever you can manage to conjure up to get people interested won't make the slightest difference. Nobody cares, really. Some of other winners. The Goldilocks spot. Where exoplanets are found to be in the perfect position to harbor life. Not to hot, no to cold. The problem is, among the hundreds of exoplanets discovered, not one is remotely within the Goldilocks spot.

And of course, the winner of the ultimate, most inappropriately convoluted, utterly mislabeled term of all time.....Arab Spring.

That's not too hot, not too cold.

Christ holds all things together.

“For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities— all things have been created through Him and for Him. 17He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.”

Colossians 1:16-17

I was going to say Duct Tape, but I think your response is much more truthful.

Truthful, maybe. Funnier? No.

My favorite:

The Ds3* particle is made of one charm antiquark and one strange quark.
So quarks now come in 6 flavors, two of which are "charm" and "strange". Sounds so magical.

If we are looking for what holds everything together, we already had the term "strong" force (aka "strong interaction"). Isn't that sufficient?

You also deserve credit for not calling it, like some people do, Duck Tape. (Quack, quack.)

Universal adhesive, that’s right. Something that looks nice, but not too expensive.

Well, if it is holding particles together, “gluon” would be a catchy name, but they’ve already used that for a gauge boson. Maybe they can call this the “tapeon” or the “stickyon”.

As we are boxed in into this particular non-binding, name game, how about Quantum Adhesive, now extra quarkier.

Well if it was expensive but doesn’t look nice then they discovered my ex-wife.

It’s ‘JB Weld’ isn’t it? I’ve used that epoxy to repair aluminum threads.
