Bushmeat -specifically bats known to carry strains of the deadly Ebola virus- is now believed to be behind the start of today's unsettling Ebola crisis.
The first victim of the current outbreak in humans was a two-year-old child in Guinea -whos family hunted bats for food- and it's starting to look like the common African practice of eating bushmeat could very well be responsible for the mess we now find ourselves in.
The family said to have introduced the disease to the human race are from the village of Gueckedou in SE Guinea, where bats known to carry the Ebola virus are still frequently hunted and eaten.
Researchers are calling that first fatality -on 12.06.2013- 'Child Zero', and the family has admitted in interviews that they hunted, ate, and fed the toddler two species of bat which carry the Ebola virus.
Unregulated, virus-ridden bushmeat commonly includes chimpanzees, gorillas, fruit bats and monkeys, but sometimes even porcupines, rats, snakes, and other sub-Saharan varmints.
To dirt-poor Africans in the hinterlands, eating it can be a necessity at times... but for many wealthier Africans it's consumed as a delicacy, even smuggled-into the UK and
sold discreetly right-smack-dab in the middle of London... no worries, tho- it's all about multicultural tolerance.

Some guy in NY was on the radio on Friday saying that it is common for Africans to smuggle bush meat into the US in their luggage.
Multiculturalism... whoo hoo.
I flipped up the antenna on the trailer this weekend to see how many local channels there are... about 40. Half are spanish speaking, the other quarter or so are chinese or vietnamese with the balance being some form of Engrish or Ghetto or something. A few movie and oldies rerun channels.... The point being, these tribes that come here don’t intend to assimilate into the melting pot of the United States, they just live here. Some pay taxes and almost all are on the gimmedat side of society.

I read once that minorities dominate the airwaves because fewer of them can afford cable TV, but I doubt that is true today anymore- welfare probably covers that lol

Don’t know about that but they dang sure get better health care than I can afford.

This is the enviro-nazis dream diet of “eating local.” The rest of us don’t see the charm in eating bats and monkeys as sources of protein.

If I would eat squirrels I'd be as fat as Michael Moore.
White tailed deer had almost disappeared in the American landscape from the civil war period to around WWII. People just killed and ate them at will. Now we are over-run with the darn things. Same with rabbits as well.

Why is the phrase “bushmeat” used, instead of game? A translation of the common African terms?
My father grew up putting bushmeat on the table for his family, deer, rabbit, squirrel.
Maybe bushmeat means animals you really shouldn’t hunt because they’re too likely to cause disease, like primates or bats. Of course, our game might have tularemia, or chronic wasting disease - squirrel brains, anyone?

The story I heard was the kid was bitten by a bat. The liberals need to get their stories straight.
If it was trained bushmeat...why didn’t the cooking kill the virus?

Bushmeat implies unconventional and perhaps questionable sources of meat. Eating primates is just a bad idea. Bats, too. Maybe some don’t have a choice. But, there are other game species that are not so unconventional and questionable, so a distinction between the two arose.
