I Was a Futurist, Until I Realized There May Not Be a Future

The clock has run out on the climate change debate. It's time for predictions to give way to radical action.

For most of my career, I've been a trend spotter, sometimes referred to as a futurist. I've divined trends for companies seeking to innovate; anticipated consumer appetites; and kept pioneering brands ahead of the pack. My work has been a passion, a calling, never just a job. So, it was fundamentally disorienting when I realized recently, I'd lost my feeling for the future.

Gradually, over a period of I don't know how long -- months? -- my usually strong connection with intuition was lost. Something was impeding my inner vision. It happens to writers, I thought, why not futurists? I was blocked. I went about my work mechanically and began to fear I might be losing my touch. Then one day, a fortuitous meeting with a friend brought resolution.

I met Daniel, a writer, for tea at a downtown café to discuss his current work-in-progress: a spiritual perspective on climate change and the unfolding of an ecological mega-crisis. I'd been a fan of his work for years and was curious to hear how he was approaching this critical topic.

For my part, I'd been following climate-related news and had what I'd thought was a healthy concern -- strong enough to impact consumption patterns for my family and influence my political choices. But, mainstream media (even the liberal media I favor) had done me a disservice. By focusing more on the debate around climate issues rather than the details of its reality, I'd come to think I was on the right side of history simply for believing it was true. I could roll my eyes at those ignorant "climate deniers"(continued)

Some people believe in ghosts, ufos, tinfoil hats and copper bracelets. Main difference is, the climate ruse is about BIG money.

Bingo.

The doomsayers who predicted the end are so upset they missed it they’ll ensure it happens this times.

I doubt she was a “futurist”.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Futurism

Futurism is an avant-garde movement founded in Milan in 1909 by the Italian poet Filippo Tommaso Marinetti.

...Marinetti expressed a passionate loathing of everything old, especially political and artistic tradition. “We want no part of it, the past”, he wrote, “we the young and strong Futurists!” The Futurists admired speed, technology, youth and violence, the car, the airplane and the industrial city, all that represented the technological triumph of humanity over nature, and they were passionate nationalists. They repudiated the cult of the past and all imitation, praised originality, “however daring, however violent”, bore proudly “the smear of madness”, dismissed art critics as useless, rebelled against harmony and good taste, swept away all the themes and subjects of all previous art, and gloried in science.

...Futurism had from the outset admired violence and was intensely patriotic. The Futurist Manifesto had declared, “We will glorify war —the world’s only hygiene —militarism, patriotism, the destructive gesture of freedom-bringers, beautiful ideas worth dying for, and scorn for woman.”[14] Although it owed much of its character and some of its ideas to radical political movements, it was not much involved in politics until the autumn of 1913.[13] Then, fearing the re-election of Giolitti, Marinetti published a political manifesto. In 1914 the Futurists began to campaign actively against the Austro-Hungarian empire, which still controlled some Italian territories, and Italian neutrality between the major powers. In September, Boccioni, seated in the balcony of the Teatro dal Verme in Milan, tore up an Austrian flag and threw it into the audience, while Marinetti waved an Italian flag. When Italy entered the First World War in 1915, many Futurists enlisted.

The outbreak of war disguised the fact that Italian Futurism had come to an end. The Florence group had formally acknowledged their withdrawal from the movement by the end of 1914. Boccioni produced only one war picture and was killed in 1916. Severini painted some significant war pictures in 1915 (e.g. War, Armored Train, and Red Cross Train), but in Paris turned towards Cubism and post-war was associated with the Return to Order...

...Many Italian Futurists supported Fascism in the hope of modernizing a country divided between the industrialising north and the rural, archaic South. Like the Fascists, the Futurists were Italian nationalists, radicals, admirers of violence, and were opposed to parliamentary democracy. Marinetti founded the Futurist Political Party (Partito Politico Futurista) in early 1918, which was absorbed into Benito Mussolini’s Fasci di combattimento in 1919, making Marinetti one of the first members of the National Fascist Party. He opposed Fascism’s later exaltation of existing institutions, calling them “reactionary”, and walked out of the 1920 Fascist party congress in disgust, withdrawing from politics for three years; but he supported Italian Fascism until his death in 1944. The Futurists’ association with Fascism after its triumph in 1922 brought them official acceptance in Italy and the ability to carry out important work, especially in architecture. After the Second World War, many Futurist artists had difficulty in their careers because of their association with a defeated and discredited regime...

...Although in the early years of Italian Fascism modern art was tolerated and even embraced, towards the end of the 1930s, right-wing Fascists introduced the concept of “degenerate art” from Germany to Italy and condemned Futurism...

The brokers trading carbon credits would be rewarded at every transaction. It’s a license to print money.

The writer is not funny-crazy - she’s evil- crazy. She intends to kill millions of people by joining others who intend the same thing. This article is her announcement of that intention.

I agree. These are dangerous people that rationalize the goodness of cattle cars and crematoriums. They are socialists and the cult of death.

"According to the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) and others, the current estimate for the earth's temperature rise by 2100 is 3-5 degrees Celsius, which would threaten and irrevocably damage plant, animal and human ecosystems; bring about extreme weather events and pandemics; cause coastal flooding and inland droughts; and probably, ultimately wipe out a large portion of the human population."

We're at a crossroads. Bill McKibben wrote recently, "The next 10 years will be decisive when it comes to the planet's future -- what we do (or don't) will play out over geologic time."

Quoting "Atlantic Monthly" and "New York Review of Books writers with crazy eyes is good buzz too.

Over a hundred million dead from Communism as well. Another man-made act.

Some scholars have estimated that between the time when Josef Stalin ruled the Soviet Union between 1928 and 1953 and when Mao Zedong ruled China between 1949 and 1976, the death toll from a combination of mass shootings, labor camps, forced exile, and ill-advised economic policies could be as high as 150 MILLION. That's fifteen times what the Nazis achieved with the Final Solution (die Endlösung).

Only 235 days left until we are doomed, that is how much time we have left according to Algore. Remember he said we are all going to burn up. How could Algore be wrong. This is the same guy that invented the Internet. Almost 10 years ago he made that prediction, we have wasted those 10 years. Oh Algore, if only we had listened to you and bought enough carbon credits we could have prevented our demise. Head to the north pole while you still have time, don't wait to become BBQ. Abandon all hope. There is still time to create a liberal paradise in the tropical north pole.

I read this thinking the author was male, and I was also thinking “what an unbelievable weenie this guy is!” The after I read it I found out the author was female, and I just said to myself Oh..that explains it. Truly revealing what a male chauvinist pig I am for the umpteenth time!

That's nothing. In 1969 "they" said we'd run out of oil by 1979. Unfortunately, there was no internet to laugh at them.

Ah, socialist climate social justice, ie. just like with Obamacare, deciding who will get the free boob job vs. the life saving operation, they push for climate earning equality.

If Capitalism does not correct prices, government will ration and be Big Weather

it is simple capitalism. If price of oil goes above $200, people do not buy it and use something else. Capitalism will stop or slow carbon consumption long long before the climate will ever be affected.

What is happening is that someone wants to do price fixings, which means free oil for government while we get rationed, ie. let a loose institution of criminals completely loot the land dry.
