They don’t want us to exist off the grid. It’s becoming increasingly obvious that if we’re not able to be monitored, we’re a “kook” or even an enemy of the state. If we work through TOR or VPNs, we’re paranoid.

While I don’t support this man’s choice of careers, a life sentence for setting up a back-channel bazaar confounds the senses. There will come a time where those of us who voluntarily choose to stay away from social media and other heavily-monitored online venues will be considered a threat to national security.

Yeah. My local conservative talk radio station announced this morning that the State advised them that their phones are tapped.

Also, when Fireman Montage 813 was talking to a book collector’s neighbor, the neighbor said she ‘never trusted them.’ ‘Why?’ asked Montag. She pointed at the roof, ‘no TV antenna.’

Agreed.
Actually I don't know that I condemn his career choice of providing a private bartering system that was off the Government's monitoring Grid. The only 'wrong' I see if by our Government overlords.
Don't bend the knee to the slave-masters and you get thrown into the hoosegow for life.

“While I don’t support this man’s choice of careers, a life sentence for setting up a back-channel bazaar confounds the senses.”

His mistake was actively being involved in drug transactions and recruiting dealers (and supposedly paying to resolve disputes with violence). Drugs are the most lucrative product on Earth and he got too greedy.

If he simply kept it as an open site and didn’t get involved in increasing drug sales, the sentence would have likely been more lenient
