Has Lexus really done it? Looks like we’ve got a hoverboard, folks!

You're going to insist it's fake, because that's what you do, but watch.

I’m guessing about half of you are firing up your keyboards and getting ready to type replies that consist solely of “FAKE!!!!!!” because that’s the instinctive reaction whenever a video comes out purporting to show something like this.

But remember: This isn’t some fly-by-night outfit claiming to have done the impossible in its garage. This is Lexus, which already has a pretty nice reputation and doesn’t need to beg for attention via fantastical claims it can’t back up. And if you’re going to claim a video’s been faked, you’d have to have some sort of theory as to how it was faked. Take a look:

Finally, if you want to call it fake, you need to deal with the technological explanation the inventor offers. Here it is:

Very cool, but need special magnetic surface. Besides, wasn’t Hendo hoverboard first? Well, Back to the Future was first, but I mean in the real world?

There was a time when paved roads were a cost-prohibitive absurdity. Cubic dollars (drachmas, gold coins, ...) were thrown at the problem, and eventually we solved it. Auto-mobiles were preposterous for most of human history, but now we’ve had them for just a dozen decades or so.

Not sure when or if we’ll get to outright anti-gravity levitation (as opposed to just one opposing fundamental force expensively overpowering another), but should a suitably compelling reason for near-ground floating vehicles arise, and economy of scale apply, we’ll eventually see it in the real world.

So it’s a superconductor over a magnetic track. Even if the entire skate park were magnetic, how do you turn?

That’s very cool!

If you haven’t done so please find and read Dave Barry’s “A Guide to Guys”.

One of the funniest books, and great insight into why we build stuff like this.
