Inequality in everything: The rich get better breakfast sandwiches, too
The Washington Post's Wonkblog ^ | October 13, 2015 | Roberto A. Ferdman

Earlier this year, New York Times food critic Pete Wells was moved to write 841 words about breakfast sandwiches. It was a love letter of sorts, an ooey gooey ode to the most basic form of one of the most basic morning foods. But it was also a complaint: A new restaurant called BEC — short for Bacon Egg and Cheese — was about to open in Manhattan, and he was less than pleased.

Breakfast sandwiches, Wells explained, are nothing if not practical, prepared quickly and eaten on the go, stuffed with modest ingredients and sold at a reasonable price. No matter how nice the cheese or expensive the bacon, he wrote, nothing would ever live up to the original, no-frills sandwich: "the classic and possibly highest formulation: bacon, scrambled eggs and cheese on a roll." And yet here was a trendy new spot, readying itself to sell fancy pants egg sandwiches at four times the normal price. That is, for as much as $11.50.

Wells's angst was the angst of anyone who feels queasy about the upscalification (yes, that's a made-up word) of anything originally made by and for the working class....

We just call muffins muffins. Oh heck, no you wouldn’t get me near a blood sausage, genuinely excruciating ditto haggis.

“Near as I can tell, the most popular dish around is chicken tikka marsala, with anything Italian coming in a close second.”

Yes bizarre, chicken tikka marsala is Britains most popular. Why I’m not sure, I myself cannot stand Indian food. I like Italian food though.

We do nice bread, I don’t miss it as I’m still here :)

“Its still hard to beat a breakfast taco with sausage, cheese, egg and onions. Maybe some Hatch green chile too. That is the way we roll here in Tejas.”

You have this for breakfast? Now you see, I’d have to have a lie down and a nap after something like that!

Actually both Parties enjoy redistributing taxpayer dollars.

The Ds give them to the poor, illegals, immigrants, etc.which harms all Americans.

The Rs are experts too at giving our tax dollars as handouts to the rich. It is crony capitalism where big box stores selling mostly Chinese crap are blackmailing pols so they are then given our tax dollars as seed money.

I don’t think I’d be willing to pay big bucks for a basic BEC sandwich that was over priced.

It is my favorite sandwich, know matter the time of day. It is what we had for supper tonight on wheat toast. It is one of the food groups that has the most nutrition. I don’t care if it is on the go or a sit down meal. Hey, I can watch TV and eat too. I can even add some home fries to the meal if I’m well enough to do more than cook the eggs.

I won’t be paying $11 for a BEC sandwich...not even in New York.

One of my worst memories, food-wise at least:

It was one of those long, dreary nights in a local hospital family waiting room...Mom had been in the hospital several nights and it was my turn to pull duty. It was 5am, the hospital cafeteria had just opened, and I went down & ordered a BEC sandwich with a side of hash browns. The food came in two separate Styrofoam containers. I went back to the waiting room, sat down, opened & set both containers in my lap. I’m fumbling with salt & pepper packs and “slip”...the BEC container slips out of my lap and hits the floor upside down, sandwich halves open and face down on the shiny linoleum.

I seriously considered invoking the “5 second rule” but decided against it as this was, afterall, a hospital waiting room. I threw it away.

Talk about traumatic. It was such a beautiful sandwich...
