The Myth About "Moderate Rebels" and existence of "Free Syrian Army" in Syria

Washington has been continuing to develop measures against the Russian strategy in Syria. First of all, the US has to demonstrate the existence of the so-called “moderate rebels”. For that reason the topic of the “Free Syrian Army” (FSA) became popular in the US and European media. But what is the FSA?

FSA units were created about half a year after the start of the Syrian war.Turkey supported this idea. However, it always was a PR myth and never was a real power in the battlefield. The first FSA activity was noted in 2011 when its leader, a former colonel of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA), Riad al-Asaad made a statement about the creation of the FSA. Sunni deserters from the SAA became the core of the group. Turkey started supplies of arms and equipment, but there weren’t any confirmed reports of FSA operations.

In 2012, Riad al-Asaad was injured in a car incident and lost a leg. After this event FSA’s level of activity dropped even lower. Moreover, the local FSA units didn’t comply with Ankara orders. There wasb no central commander or a chain of command. In 2012, Turkey abandoned its attempts to turn the FSA into a real power in Syria. Separately, Washington didn’t support the FSA because of its minor role in Syria.

In the end of 2012, the FSA went into liquidation. Nonetheless, separate units still exist in the battlefield. Turkish intelligence services use them for their own purposes. In general, these units are based at Homs, Aleppo and in southern Syria. Another part of the FSA joined terrorist groups such as Al Nusra.

The so-called “Southern Front of the Free Syrian Army”, indeed, isn’t a part of the FSA. It consists of tribal people living at the border of Syria and Jordan. They fight only to defend their settlement zone. The 700 militants who surrendered to the Syrian government in Daraa were members of this tribal militia.

Indeed, the US has never supplied arms and equipment to the FSA. The FSA units didn’t include Qatari or Saudi mercenaries. It has always been a failed Syrian project.

Instead, Saudi mercenaries and members of the Saudi Special Forces have been actively participating in the Jabhatal-Nusra terrorist group and similar entities.

Thus, 90% of the so-called “Syrian rebels” are clearly terrorists supported by Qatar, Saudi Arabia and other foreign players. The moderate opposition doesn’t exist, or at most it controls minor areas in some parts of Syria. So if theWhite House wants to prove that Russia bombs the wrong terrorists, it should show leaders of these so-called “moderate rebels”, their history of rebellion and distinct areas of their control. Otherwise the complaints about hitting wrong targets are pure and simple lies.

Why aren’t Saudi Arabia and Qatar leveled yet?

is the 10s of billions at the LEAST they have given to terrorists not enough?

19 of them were on the 9/11 planes so we promptly attacked Iraq.

It disgusts me.

Wonder who got that $500 million we sent to train and arm these moderates? Do you suppose they would send it back to us?

True, all the same, Assad is an Al Qaeda collaborator as well and his Shabiha is right out of the 3rd Reich. Russia can feel free to collaborate with the creator of the problems in Syria and who, as a heritage spokesman put it, is the biggest mass murderer of the century.

This article talks about AL Nusra who has made ground against Assad:

From Aug 23, 2015:

"a recent investigation conducted by Novaya Gazeta, one of the few independent newspapers left in Russia, complicates this cozy tale of counterterrorist cooperation. Based on extensive fieldwork in one village in the North Caucasus, reporter Elena Milashina has concluded that the “Russian special services have controlled” the flow of jihadists into Syria, where they have lately joined up not only with ISIS but other radical Islamist factions.

In other words, Russian officials are adding to the ranks of terrorists which the Russian government has deemed a collective threat to the security and longevity of its dictatorial ally on the Mediterranean, Bashar al-Assad."

Understanding Provocation [Provokatsiya]

March 29, 2014

One of the most powerful tools the Kremlin has in its secret arsenal of Special War is provocation, what they call provokatsiya.

While Moscow cannot claim to have invented this technique, which has existed as long as there have been secret services, there’s no doubt that Russians have perfected the art and taken it to a whole new level of sophistication and deviousness. At times, it can become a strategy all on its own (not always, mind you, with edifying results).

Provokatsiya simply means taking control of your enemies in secret and encouraging them to do things that discredit them and help you. You plant your own agents provocateurs and flip legitimate activists [in this case, dupe actual Jihadis -ETL], turning them to your side.

When you’re dealing with extremists to start with, getting them to do crazy, self-defeating things isn’t often difficult. In some cases, you simply create extremists and terrorists where they don’t exist. This is causing problems in order to solve them, and since the Tsarist period, Russian intelligence has been known to do just that.

While this isn’t a particularly nice technique, it works surprisingly well, particularly if you don’t care about bloody and messy consequences. ..."

There are no moderate Cubans mercenaries, either, no moderate Hezbollah terrorists, no moderate North Korean mercenaries, no moderate KGB agents. Putin was the head of the KGB [which now goes by a different name] and he is being supported by Hezbollah terrorists who have the blood of hundreds of Americans on their hands and untold numbers of Lebanese Christians and Israeli jews as well... and his Cuban and North Korean hardline communists fighters come straight from their homelands which still have political prisoners languishing in foul cells for the crime of writing poetry or worshipping God rather than the State... let Putin show his “goodwill” by telling his Norks to open the gates of their concentration camps and release hundreds of thousands whom they imprisoned, every man, woman and child for the Koreans imprison entire families for the alleged thought crimes of but one member. Let Putin’s mullahs of Iran drop their incessant calls to destroy Israel and their support of suicide bombings, and release the Americans they hold hostage.

The unfortunate thing for those people on the ground who really are trying to rid themselves of Hezbollah and Assad is that Obama, an Illinois communist, is and always has been on the side of Russia, Cuba, and North Korea whenever their interests collide with those of the US or Israel, and the vacuum Obama has created by his deliberate inaction and in his desire to stick it to our intel agencies and military has left Assad’s opposition with little choice of allies as they seek to hold out until saner heads prevail in the US. Russia knows it has but one year to accomplish its goals until Obama is gone... so do our military planners. It’s going to be a long, long year for all, and God help us all if the communists in this country manage to install another president of like mind.

The North Koreans and Cubans and Hezbollah and Iranian IRGC are helping to fight against them, go ahead and tell us how moderate North Koreans and Cubans and the Quds forces are, and how moderate the old KGB head is, who in his time as KGB head was financing terrorist groups in the US such as the Weather Underground; I’d love to hear the story of how and when they came to Jesus, especially since it is Russia that has been and still is and will continue helping Syria, Iran and North Korea’s nuclear programs, and Iran has been trying to help Venezuela and Cuba in that direction, as well.

Obama’s destroyed the work of at least 2 generations of American covert work in less than 8 years, and he has done it as Putin’s sock puppet, while good people try to continue the fight without any support from him or from you. Meanwhile FR has been invaded by Llew Rockwell nuts... and fools who in their hatred of our worthless but temporary C-in-C are ready to sing The Internationale and goose step with Pootie Poot. May as well make a donation to his nuclear proliferation program, too, so you can glow with pride when Iran finally makes a public test of its islamic bomb.

Many of the posters on these threads are under the influence of Russian internet trolls and disinformation campaigns intended to promote Russian expansion. Critical minds should not be so easily duped. Some of these fools actually think Russia’s militaristic forays is for the same or even nobler purposes than the West’s.

“There are no moderate muslims.”

You are exactly right. Even your neighbors who by all outward appearances are mild mannered, assimilated, law abiding members of the community are covertly supporting radial Islam through their mosques and other outward appearing Muslim charities.

Say I’m a reasonably well educated Syrian “would-be” moderate, possibly a Sunni deserter from Assad’s Army.

Options are:

1.) Stay and fight for the outside chance me and my moderate friends might prevail and inherit a thoroughly distoryed country where terrorism will be an ongoing occurance for the next decade.

2.) take what’s left of my family and walk to Germany.

I’ll take 2.
