While the debate over road funding has been a prominent story in news outlets lately, few people have noticed that cameras on highways and at traffic lights could be a way for governments to take in more money from motorists. While governments may financially benefit from the cameras, the companies that lease them to governments lobby heavily for their use.
But now a bill in the Michigan Legislature seeks to clarify the state's position on traffic cameras.
Senate Bill 593, introduced by State Sen. Mike Shirkey, R-Clarklake, bans the use of unmanned traffic monitoring devices to detect or enforce violations related to speed limits, traffic signs, signals, markings and high-occupancy vehicle lanes.

Just another Liberal idea that can’t survive under its own weight.
Like the draconian cigarette tax that was going to pay for healthcare.
Both FAIL MISERABLY when the populace - no matter how smart or dumb - figure out that if you don’t speed, run red lights or as in the above, smoke, the ‘moneys’ that are going to ‘solve ALL problems’, go away.
‘They’ keep telling us that the cameras are not there for punitive reasons, they are there for safety.
If that is the case, fine should be minimal and penalty for the infractions be loss of car and some jail time.
‘Normal’ people will start driving 10 MPH below posted speed and stop for green lights if they think it is about to ‘change’.
They are already unlawful
Long overdue step. Police are repeatedly caught red-handed “diddling” the duration of yellow light from 4 seconds to 3 seconds so they can “enhance” revenue anonymously. Disgusting!
YES!
They're a terrible distraction and you don't know if the guy ahead of you is going to slam on his brakes.
And another big problem with red light cameras, at least in Fla., the ticket is mailed to whoever’s name is on the car’s registration. I just learned this the hard way, loaned one of my cars to my brother in law, he got caught, but I’m on the hook. Needless to say, it’s a huge controversy in Hernando Cty, even the local politicians here encourage people who get caught to plead not guilty and take it to traffic court.
I wish somebody would invent a rubber-necker camera.
